📌 UPDATE ON THE 100% TUITION POLICY 📌
Despite intensive diplomatic efforts by the 92nd Guild Government, Management has maintained a strict 100% tuition requirement for the exam series starting tomorrow, 18th May.
However, a window remains for individual appeals in cases of genuine financial hardship. We call upon all affected students to peacefully approach the Vice Chancellor’s Office tomorrow morning with their:
- Student ID
- Provisional Financial Statement
- Commitment Letter
Yesterday, I got to learn something as I attended the swearing-in ceremony of the 92nd Guild government of @Makerere headed by @kadondigracious.
The function was going on smoothly not until they mentioned the name of the 91st Guild president @ssentamu_cj. I heard students start booing him and giving him "ziii" and calling him all sorts of names. This reminded me of how they(students) gave him a big welcome as he was going to swear in and this gave me a lesson as a young person tending to be in any leadership position.
I learnt that lack of accountability to the electorate makes you a bad leader. In a sense that if there was a report or a message passed to the electorate after every decision taken or a proposal made it would be of great value. This makes you not only a concerned leader to the electorate but after your tenure, even if some of the proposals did not come to pass but at least the electorate's concerns are tabled and they know that in case some other leader after you pushes those proposals, at least they can be worked on. To me I feel Mr. Churchill has proposals that he had laid before the University council, but just because these proposals were not told to the electorate, it makes him (Churchill) a bad leader in front of his electorate that jubilated him upon winning the office.
Secondly, the president is not the only one who makes every decision, that's why there are lower positions that help the president to make a decision that is of great importance. In the case of @Makerere, we have Guild Representatives Council (GRC's), CGC's, and other positions, it's in these positions where the cabinet is made. So other than the president carrying the burden alone, these leaders below him must also be questioned at a point, but have never heard any being pinned.
Thirdly, as any other government, there's a reason as to why debates, or parliamentary sessions are recorded live or even there are records through the hansard of every session, to me I think, this should also apply to our governments at @Makerere, because this has two or more advantages.
One being, easy accountability of the governments to the students, secondly, as "WE BUILD FOR THE FUTURE" as our motto says, this acts as a training ground for those who would want to continue there political ambitions, because I think, one of the reasons as to why we have members of parliament who complete their terms without speaking a word on the floor of @Parliament_Ug, is because some of them didn't undergo such training in the earlier stages of their leadership.
As I conclude, transparency matters in any kind of leadership because as a leader, think of the time when you'll be out of that office, where you no longer hold those privileges, or even act as a role model or mentor to the young people or even society no longer giving you the respect that you really deserve. I think if this was done under @ssentamu_cj government or any other, we would have leaders that stand for a purpose and clear representation of the students' or people's voices. I beg to submit
Justice sustains positive change
Not all change is good. Justice helps guide change so it benefits everyone, not just a few. Yes we can bring that Justice and yes we can bring that change.
HUMBLE SUGGESTION
Considering that the dying Dr Besigye is still kept in prison against all pleas and cries, I think government hasn’t yet heard. Together with other measures being worked out, starting tomorrow (Monday) morning, let us reply every tweet of every government official or unit with this picture of BESIGYE. Let us help them see it everywhere.
If they still don’t see the picture and act by end of Tuesday, let us escalate to reply to every tweet of theirs with CASKETS.
