Journalists must be treated with respect and allowed to carry out their work freely, without fear or intimidation. I strongly condemn this attack on members of the press and urge the government to conduct an immediate investigation and take appropriate action against the police officers responsible.
Local government belongs to the people - not to any party office. Appointing active party leaders as city corporation administrators raises serious questions about electoral neutrality and democratic commitment.
Citizens deserve elected representatives, not partisan caretakers.

Following Tuesday’s killing of Indian tourists in Kashmir’s Pahalgam, some hardline Hindutva leaders have given calls to drive away all Kashmiri Muslims from mainland India. They have identified the militant assault as an “attack on Hindus, by Muslims or Kashmiri Muslims”.
BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari in West Bengal threatened, “In revenge for the killing of 26, we want to see 260 bodies of jihadis.”
Militants killed 26 people in Pahalgam. Kashmiri Muslim pony operator Syed Adil Hussain Shah was among those who were killed there. He sacrificed his life while trying to snatch a gun from a militant in an attempt to save some Hindu tourists. On Thursday, Jhantu Ali Sheikh, a Muslim Indian Army commando was killed during a fight with some militants in Kashmir.
Yet, Hindu right-wing groups are blaming the entire Muslim community for the Pahalgam attack and are inciting Hindus to attack all Muslims, particularly Kashmiri Muslims, violently. Violent attacks against Kashmiri Muslims have begun across the country since Wednesday. The Hindutva activists are also not sparing other Indian Muslims from attacks and harassment.
Tens of thousands of Kashmiri students study in schools, colleges and universities across mainland India. Over the past few days, many of them have been targeted in violent attacks by right-wing Hindu activists.
Countless Kashmiri Muslims are involved in different types of jobs and other businesses in different Indian states. Right-wing Hindu leaders have declared that they would be driven away from mainland India.
A BJP MLA, who is known as a hard-line Hindutva leader, climbed onto a mosque in Jaipur, Rajasthan, and chanted slogans against Pakistan and Islam.
Members of a right-wing Hindu cow vigilante group killed two Muslim biryani sellers in Agra on Thursday just because they were Muslim. The killings of these two are in retaliation for the massacre in Pahalgam. We will take revenge by killing 2,600 Muslims,” the leader of the group said.
Following the Pahalgam incident, many Muslim migrant labourers from West Bengal were attacked in Odisha, Jharkhand and other states. Hindutva activists beat them up and drove them away from the states.
On Friday, some radical Hindus threw out some Muslims from a local train near Kolkata. “You killed our brothers in Pahalgam. You cannot travel with us on the train,” they told those Muslims. They also abused Islam while pushing the Muslim passengers off the train.
On Thursday, a Hindu female doctor openly said that she would not treat any Muslim patient. "People from your religion killed members of my Hindu community. From now on, I will not provide medical service to any Muslim patient," the gynaecologist told a pregnant Muslim woman.
Will the entire Muslim community be held responsible for the killings in Pahalgam just because their killers happened to be Muslim? Over the past few days, we have seen scores of social media posts describing how local Kashmiri Muslims made sincere efforts to help the trapped Indian tourists. On social media, many Hindu tourists wrote how the local Muslims took trouble to rescue them from Pahalgam, immediately after Tuesday’s incident.
The BJP and right-Hindu groups look for excuses to attack minority Muslims in India. This way, they are communally polarising the society. In Hindu-majority India, such polarisation helps the Hindu party garner more votes and grow in power.
The right-wing Hindu extremists who are targeting minority Muslims and Christians actually operate as foot soldiers of the BJP. This is why the BJP-led governments do not bother to act against or restrain them.
This is the reason why we do not see any possibility of an end to atrocities against Indian Muslims, which are perpetrated by the Hindutva extremists.
