Seven years ago, after the results of the Brexit referendum came through, this young woman was asked to put her thoughts about it on camera. Her eloquent words spoke for so many of us – and her worst fears have tragically come true.
#BrexitDay
On World Refugee Day, I'm sharing my humble journey from seeking safety to becoming a doctor:
. 1999 - forced to leave family in Afghanistan to seek safety in UK aged 15 having lived childhood in war and camps
. 2001 - started college (A-levels) with not much formal education or command of English
. 2003 - got admitted to study medicine at @Cambridge_Uni despite many discouraging, saying I wasn't white and not educated enough
. 2006 - graduated from Cambridge and finished studies at Harvard and Imperial despite battling PTSD and loneliness
. 2010 - qualified as a doctor, and have since been proudly serving people in the NHS and 🌎 as a doctor.
If there’s one thing I’ve learnt on this journey, it’s this - refugees are not victims. We are survivors, dreamers, contributors. The bravery of all those who seek safety should be celebrated.
And there we have it…
#Brexit as a vehicle to roll back on environmental and health standards, just like we said and the Brexit salespeople denied.
This is terrible and maddening news. https://t.co/W7IHLvkekh
To fight climate change, France bans domestic flights where cities are linked by train with a journey time of two and a half hours or less. Will mean flights between Paris, Nantes, Bordeaux and Lyons will be shut down.
Is the first country in the world to introduce such a ban.
