After 79 years of independence, India has finally built its first homemade MRI machine.

Bengaluru startup VoxelGrids, backed by Zoho, spent 12 years developing a fully indigenous 1.5 Tesla MRI scanner. It skips the costly liquid helium used in traditional machines, making it around 40% cheaper to build and far more energy efficient.

The scanner is already up and running at Chandrapur Cancer Care Foundation near Nagpur, helping cut India's heavy reliance on imported medical equipment from global giants.

With India having only about 5,000 MRI machines for its entire population, this breakthrough could mean faster, cheaper scans for smaller hospitals and rural areas in the years ahead.

During the Congress rule in Haryana, an elderly man was forcibly picked up and subjected to a crude vasectomy just to fulfill the sterilization target, without even stitches, causing a severe infection in his wounds. After the murder of Punjab Kesari owner Lala Jagat Narayan, Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale came to the Gurudwara in Chando Kalan village of Hisar district. Chaudhary Bhajan Lal was the Chief Minister at that time and he was very angry with the Khalistanis. He ordered the Haryana Police to carry out an encounter of Bhindranwale. The Haryana Police surrounded the entire village from all sides and appealed to the villagers to maintain peace and not come in between, saying they would finish their work that night and leave. Bhindranwale realised that this was his last night. He immediately contacted India’s Home Minister Giani Zail Singh and requested him to somehow get him out of there, saying he would not even sleep facing towards Haryana again. Giani Zail Singh spoke to Chief Minister Bhajan Lal and asked him to listen to his request and let Bhindranwale go. Reluctantly, Bhajan Lal had to obey and allowed Bhindranwale to leave from there. If the Home Minister had not intervened that day, Bhindranwale’s dead body would have left Chando Kalan.

During the Congress government’s rule, there was an Employment Officer in Bhiwani named Ishwar Singh. The then Chief Minister sent him a list of his close associates with orders to provide them government jobs. Ishwar Singh firmly refused to prepare any fake list. The very next day, the police picked him up, registered false cases against him, dismissed him from service, stripped him naked in the police station, brutally beat him and subjected him to third-degree torture. He was then left to rot in jail for two years. However, no one could touch that Congress Chief Minister because he was very close to the Royal Family of India.

When elections for the Bhiwani Bar Association were held and the son of the then Congress Chief Minister contested, Peetambar dared to oppose him. As a result, he was declared medically unfit in the test, his judgeship dream was destroyed, and false cases were filed against him, his father, and his 80-year-old grandfather. In Haryana, when the Congress government was in power, the son of an influential Congress leader was appearing for his 12th board exams. Sushila Sangwan was the teacher on duty. When the boy started cheating, the teacher stopped him. The boy tried to threaten and intimidate her, but she did not allow him to cheat. He got up and left the examination hall. That evening, the teacher did not reach home. She did not return the next day either. After three days, the matter reached the media. The then Chief Minister was in Hisar, and when journalists asked him about the teacher’s abduction, he replied, “She must have run away with her lover. What can we do about it?” The very next day, the woman teacher’s body was found in a canal near Hisar. The family was left crying and wailing, but no one could do anything against the powerful.

Ruchika Girhotra, a 14-year-old talented tennis player, had gone for practice with her friend Aradhana when SPS Rathore, an IPS officer and President of the Haryana Tennis Association, called both girls to his room. He sent Aradhana outside on the pretext of calling the coach, then grabbed Ruchika, pulled her towards him and molested her. When Ruchika screamed, Aradhana returned and witnessed the incident. Rathore threatened both girls with dire consequences if they spoke out. Despite the threats, Ruchika and her family bravely filed a police complaint, but instead of action, false theft cases were filed against her brother, who was brutally tortured and paraded naked in front of their house. Police in plain clothes repeatedly threatened the family, Ruchika was expelled from school and banned from tennis, leading her into severe depression. Eventually, she took her own life. The Congress and Chautala governments of that time not only failed to act against Rathore but promoted him to Director General of Police. The family fought a long legal battle and finally got him convicted in 2008. Those were the so-called democratic governments — and now people talk about dictatorship.
