I appreciate the work of principals everywhere because the principal's role is like middle management in the business worldโlots of responsibility, but limited authority.
Teachers love Admin who:
1) Roll up their sleeves to help
2) Really listen
3) Present: in classrooms, hallways, cafeteria, lunchroom
4) Value teachers' time
5) Support/encourage them
6) Respect /value them
7) Have their back
8] Appreciate them
Effective teachers don't center their approach on rules, but rather on relationships, routines, & expectations. Prioritizing these over rules means spending less time enforcing them. When you invest in relationships, routines, & expectations, rule enforcement becomes less needed
I have heard it said, if they dont praise you show up & work anyway, or if they criticize/don't appreciate you show up & do the work anyway. I get being self driven and never giving up, but why should anyone have to work like this.Effective leaders encourage, praise, & appreciate
Admin, take time to:
*Say hello to staff & students in the hall
* Check on teachers, especially life events theyโre dealing with
* Sit in on classes & leave note
* Occasionally sub
*Show staff you appreciate them
* Ask what staff needs to succeed
* Encourage
* Say Thank you
