If I were to meet someone who I see as living only for joy, it probably means I’m lacking insight and context.

Pursuits weren’t in question until just now 😬 But in a general sense, for a working person with a job and a family and a mortgage and a million commitments and scarce time, getting through life without everyone thinking you’re a dickhead is a worthy enough pursuit.

@VeraBurd97 @Jrawry You can come up with contrived examples that push things a bit. ‘Two queens owned a castle. The queens’ castle was very old.’ Sometimes you rephrase a whole sentence to avoid confusing readers with this stuff. Copy editing is often about managing ambiguity!

@VeraBurd97 @Jrawry I spent my early career as a copy editor at an education company, and our house style was based on the Chicago Manual of Style. Our rule for this was to follow pronunciation. So my name, Dodds, would be Dodds’s in the possessive form. The important thing is to be consistent.

@VeraBurd97 Absolutely worth it. Everything people here are saying is totally on point, and there’s an added benefit: your cover letters will help you develop a body of language you can deploy in interviews. Turns of phrase, specific word choices, higher-level persuasive arguments, etc.

@VeraBurd97 That’s good to admit! Truly! There’s nothing worse than an unwilling project manager. As for writing (in the broadest sense), have you looked much into marketing/copywriting, community management, guides writing, technical writing?
