Years ago, I put a deposit down for a $320k property in Australia. Shortly afterwards, I realised that for my children's well-being I needed to take them back to Nigeria. In their teens, they needed to have a strong sense of connection to their extended family and sink their roots in the land of their grandfather. Our First Nations elders here teach us that connection to land and the Earth we came from is very important for holistic health. There was a place in Nigeria that is almost sacred to my children. Their hearts feel restored when they are on that land. And that was where I had to return them.

So I gave up my income, property portfolio plan and returned to Nigeria where I would have to start over again and put myself at major risk again. The deposit was instead invested in a Nigerian friend's company and she did me dirty. I never got one Naira out of the large capital put into the business and in those days it was worth a lot more than it's worth today. It still hurts and I don't forgive her. I also brought all my savings for other Nigerian-owner businesses but the owners were also not disciplined so there was no hope in salvaging what I put in. I am grateful, nonetheless, that the decision to return was good for my children. I just learned that the same property I wanted to purchase here is now valued at over $1m.

I left Nigeria in my late 40s and had to start over yet again building my assets from scratch, this time while being a carer for elderly parents and still with several dependents in Nigeria. God has been merciful to me as somehow opportunities to cover my bills have come my way without my parents giving me a leg up or having inheritance. I have been duped even here, though, by migrant women I tried to help, and foreign companies I also tried to support, but we live and learn. There have been days I have eaten only once a day to be able to pay all the bills and keep my commitments to all the dependents but overcoming challenges requires mettle and not giving up. I don't focus on the tough days because there is so much more to be grateful about.

What I can say for sure is that it's never really too late to start again in a new country where there is relative fairness in the system. Always be open to upskilling and being an asset to anyone you work with. When you add value to a business, word of mouth recommends you to others. Gradually, when your reputation as immensely capable gets around, you can set your own value and have others step up to meet your price point. A few rejections should not detract you. If you are also greedy and entitled, you may not get far. But if you are reliable and over-deliver on expectations, and you can make others look good and make them money, you will always be in demand and people will even compete to have you help them.

I have set my sights on growing assets again in some sort of strategy that is logical and avoiding the lack of boundaries that come with investing in people you have a relationship with or feel compassion for, and I believe it's not too late for this. Small, consistent actions, discipline, and the right mindset are important to achieve your goals.

President Tinubu may have hoped to turn Kano into a one party state, not through meaningful development or uplifting the people, but through political scheming. That approach misunderstands Kano completely. From the days of NEPU to the era of Santsi da Tabo, Kano has never been, and will never be, a one-party state. Kano is not Lagos, Oga master strategist!

Kano is the home of radical, conscious politics. We do not oppose for the sake of opposition; we oppose to demand better governance, fairness, and accountability.

What exactly has been done for Kano by Tinubu's administration to justify expecting unanimous support? When concerns were raised about the concentration of projects in Lagos and appointments skewed along narrow lines, those concerns were ignored and all we got were insults.

Leadership is earned through fairness and impact, not imposed through strategy. If Kano is denied development, then Kano will respond at the ballot. It’s as simple as that.

As the saying goes, “Power is not given to those who demand loyalty, but to those who earn trust.”

As we enter the last 10 nights of Ramadan and a period of intensive charity, please think more deeply about how to foster dignity and independence rather than dependence, subservience, dishonesty and the celebrity sheikh / influencer industry.

Zakat and sadaqah were meant to serve as equitable redistribution of wealth, to elevate those who have been held back by their circumstances. They were never about leaving them down and perpetually in need of our favours. Communities must be empowered to actively lead and drive their own development. They must be afforded human dignity.

Take back your agency as a donor and don't be misguided by poverty porn. Zakat begins in your local community; your neighbours; the people you know. We have a responsibility to right the wrongs of stuctural injustice in our own back yard.

This poor Hausa boy doesn't have the mouth or the muscle to argue with such aggressive behaviour and cheating. Yet people on this app try to brainwash us into thinking it's people like this boy who must be blamed for all Nigeria's problems. He is not the one stealing your oil money or killing your people in the Middle Belt. His family may also have been farmers killed or obliged to pay just to access their farms. He has no political clout. He has no power. His relatives have never ruled the country. All they have ever done is traded. He is making an honest living for himself instead of being a cult member, thief or thug. Yet he is viewed as nothing more than an inferior "Aboki" and the reason why Nigeria cannot progress.

The number of young Northerners on this app who dare to be outspoken in opposition to bad governance who get taken away and 'taught a lesson' is extremely disturbing. Northern youth have been treated this way for decades. As far back as the mid and late 2000s when I was based in Niger State, I personally knew decent young people who were bundled up and taken away at the behest of politicians.

The constant political intimidation, torture and threats that are meant to terrify activists and make their family members plead with them to be acquiescent towards whatever is done by their selfish leaders is not understood by bigots in the South who constantly spit upon them for not being as loud and well mobilised.

I have lost hope in the majority of users on this app, but still am dumbfounded at how otherwise polished and educated leaders, some of whom I have personally met, can be so heartless and cruel that they would treat their own young people this way. Abuse of power is a temptation so many in elevated positions have woefully failed at overcoming.

Northern politicians and their sycophants so quickly forget that the nobles they revere in Arewa history were the same youthful age when they became such critical thinkers and inspirational defiers of the status quo. The great ones had the liberty and support of their communities to think of new ways to steer the future of their people. Yet today, we deny potential reformers the right to question and criticise. We subdue them into perpetual serfdom. Often, the most feasible way for young people to advance a new vision for their people is to cosy up to corrupt money bags and criminals to back them. As a result, their original pure intention to serve becomes polluted by the people they must surround themselves with and pay homage to.

Supposedly champions of faith yet exhibiting such disgraceful hypocrisy. This sort of religiosity is superficial and fruitless for God clearly states that God will not change the condition of a people until they change what is within themselves. Change requires a major reorientation of values, ethics and mindset.
