The first word my daughter learned to speak was ‘book’. With wide eyes, she would point at a book and say ‘boo’ in a voice full of glee. We began taking her to a nearby Crossword bookshop (in Aundh, Pune) when she could barely walk. Our trips soon became a cherished daddy-daughter tradition, where we would visit once every month and buy three books for her. She chose two and I chose one.
A friendly employee once told me, his face beaming with pride, that this was the biggest Crossword in India! Four floors full of books felt like a heaven. But then they converted one floor into a kids play area. Another surrendered to a toy shop. Then cafes. Then stationery. Then an event space. The book shelves, once brimming with finely curated collections, became crowded with cheap campus romance and badly written historical fiction. Yet, we continued our tradition. 3 books a month!
Yesterday, we went there to find the doors shut. A man on a ladder was ripping out the Crossword sign. Slowly. Methodically. As he pulled out one letter after another, I felt a physical sensation of pain. My daughter had tears in her eyes. A glowing light somewhere was snuffed out, and the world became slightly darker. And some of my faith in humanity died forever!
A society that does not read is a society that does not know itself. We used to turn pages and paint stories with our imagination. Now we endlessly stab screens till our thumbs hurt, our minds numbed by the dopamine drip of likes and reels. We have become slaves to our devices, consuming whatever they decide for us, our thoughts hijacked by algorithms, our souls starved for meaning.
If you want your children to read, don’t tell them. Show them. Children hate listening to adults, but they love imitating them. Pick up a book yourself, and they will do the same!
P.S.: I verified the claim. The largest store of India’s most beloved chain of bookshops has indeed shut down.

Montelukast is widely prescribed in India, and sales appear to be rising. This is despite several reported adverse effects, including nightmares, depression, death by suicide. Sanjitha Muneeswaran and I make a case for stricter regulations @the_hindu 1/n
Sailing in the same boat. And, one unforseen challenge that comes up is.
Now, how difficult it is to relocate, travel etc. As, mother cannot be left alone.
You realise the privilege when privilege is taken away from you.
I am an eldest daughter -
It's been 2 years since papa left us,
From ensuring mumma and my sister didn’t feel overwhelmed to making sure my sister’s education stayed on track and our financial plans remained stable
I didn't mind the responsibilities as I was raised to be a strong from my family. And I will never mind it.
But I realised, I never processed the loss. I am processing it slowly...
in phases!
I will continue to process it for the rest of my life.
Society often expects boys to stay strong, but being the eldest daughter brings its own challenges.
Afterall, kehte hai na ladkiyon se hi ghar banta hai 🌸🙏

Today I’m learning about Indian family values from these two smart single women in Bangalore
They’re best friends from school days
They both live with their parents and wouldn’t have it any other way
I ask them a question
“What is something interesting about life in India that I can tell my friends in America?”
They think for a bit about the food, the traffic, the movies, the tech scene
They ask what do I know about family life here?
I say that I don’t know much and I’d like to learn
Their eyes go wide and they smile and they tell me about their own families
Over-protective parents who still get worried if they come home late
Aunts and uncles that have input on many decisions
And grandparents who still mother their 50 year-old children
They tell me about large gangs of cousins who do things together and make family events more fun
And how even middle class people have nurses to help them sleep through the night with new babies
They talk about feeling like kids still as adults and how nice that is
To be mothered and loved and act silly and supported
I write down the word “beautiful” in my notebook
It feels beautiful and pure and like something from a time past
I come from a Western world of nuclear families
I love my parents and my sister but they live far away
I’m not too close with my extended family
Sometimes I even forget my cousin’s names as I only see them every 5 years
That is crazy talk here where they live and party and play together as family
Now this story doesn’t apply to all 1.6 billion people in India as each family is different
Some families here have hard times and bad relationships and move away like anywhere else
But these woman are happy and proud of a family dynamic that seems foreign to me
“Life is so full with our family here,” they tell me
It is a land of family values
