🚨⚡️ A U.S. missile test… or more like a very old one.
The United States conducted a test launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile Minuteman III from Vandenberg Space Force Base — without a nuclear warhead.
-: These missiles have been in service since the 1970s, and the U.S. still has about 450 of them in its arsenal.
The new replacement missile, Sentinel, was supposed to enter service by 2030…
but the project ballooned to roughly $150 billion.
Even inside the Pentagon there’s a gloomy joke going around:
"Yeah… we’re probably not going to make that deadline."
So while budgets are being counted, the aging Minuteman III missiles keep standing guard…
with occasional launches just to check if they haven’t rusted after 50 years.
-: While billions are spent on future tech, 450 aging Minuteman III missiles remain the backbone of the US nuclear triad!
So far… they still fly. 😓🚀
