These tests assess rote memorization of material that is long-forgotten after the exam. Oral defense of concepts, critical thinking, & writing are measured in my class, but not on the STAAR.

Unpopular opinion: I don't think high schoolers should be forced to read classic literature. I know, I wasn't ready until much later.

Rather, I'd like to see them read contemporary fiction that meets them where they are and turns them into lifelong readers.
