Resting Ronaldo in La Liga games and optimizing him for UCL games was exactly how Ronaldo became the best player ever in Europe, and Messi became a domestic league merchant.
That is what Zidane understood. He knew La Liga could be sacrificed. He would rest Ronaldo against Leganes, Eibar, Getafe, so that Ronaldo would be 100% for Juventus, Bayern, Atletico in the Champions League. That prioritization is why Ronaldo has 5 UCLs and is the all-time top scorer in the competition. Messi, on the other hand, was playing full 90 minutes against Alaves in the cold just to win another Pichichi.
What Luis Enrique is doing now with resting players is the same prioritization. The only difference is he is lucky. He plays in a league where it is so hard for anyone to compete with him for the title. PSG can rest Dembele, Nuno Mendes, Kvaratskhelia, Hakimi, Vitinha and Pacho this weekend and still win Ligue 1 with their B team.
And Messi, knowing he can't do it on the big stages with Neymar gone, played all those La Liga games to stat-pad goals against Eibar and Mallorca.
He understood early what really matters. Winning 10 league titles and 2 UCLs in that span is as good as nothing compared to winning 3 UCLs in a row. League titles are for domestic merchants. The Champions League is what makes you immortal.
Joan Gaspart (former Barcelona president) on Lionel Messi:
“There’s one thing that must not be forgotten: that Barcelona is above Messi. And he’d better watch out… Who does he think he is?”

Listening to Helen Paul resonate some of the things I have always believed in.
Please take care of yourself. Don’t hold grudge against anyone but live freely.
Keep your cycle of influence tight. Dont despise anyone.
🚨 Darwin Nunez on his conversation with Cristiano Ronaldo:
“Everybody is asking why I covered my mouth when I was speaking to Cristiano.
I did it because I know how football works now. You say three words to somebody, a camera catches it, and by morning people have decided what the conversation was about.
The funny thing is, covering my mouth has made everybody even more curious.
Cristiano was smiling. We were talking about the game, and I told him, ‘You know, there’s something I find strange about you.’
He said, ‘What?’
‘You’re getting close to a thousand goals, and people are still looking for reasons not to be impressed.’
He laughed.
‘Darwin, you think I don’t know?’
I said, ‘No, but I really don’t understand it.’
I’ve been a striker all my life. Believe me, I know how difficult one goal can be. Sometimes you do everything right and the ball hits the post. Sometimes you score and somebody tells you the goalkeeper should have saved it.
Now imagine doing that nearly a thousand times, and people are still arguing about whether you deserve the goals.
I told him, ‘If there was a way to say you scored them illegally, somebody would have found it by now.’
He laughed again.
But I meant it.
People can prefer Messi. I have enormous respect for Messi. He’s one of the greatest players football has ever seen.
What I don’t understand is why some people seem unable to enjoy Messi without finding a reason to be angry at Cristiano.
You can believe Messi is the greatest footballer. That’s your opinion.
But why should Cristiano having more career goals make you angry?
It doesn’t take anything away from Messi.
That’s what I find strange. Sometimes I think people spend so much time trying to reduce Cristiano’s achievements that they forget to appreciate their own favourite player.
And I told Cristiano something else.
‘Your country should be proud of this. Football should be proud of this. We’re talking about the greatest goalscorer the game has seen. People can argue about who plays better football, but they cannot argue those goals out of existence.’
He looked at me and said, ‘I haven’t scored a thousand yet.’
I said, ‘That’s exactly the problem with you. I’m trying to give you a compliment and you’re correcting the statistics.’
He smiled.
People will look at the goal and say it was a tap-in. Fine. But I play as a striker. I know how many times you can make that same movement and the ball never arrives.
Cristiano has made a career out of being where the ball is going to be before everybody else realises it.
That’s not luck you can repeat 980 times.
But something else happened that I found interesting.
Coman was running towards goal with Cristiano beside him. Two attackers against one defender. He could have passed to Cristiano, but he decided to finish it himself.
And Cristiano celebrated with him.
I smiled because I could already imagine what people would have said if Cristiano had complained.
‘He’s selfish. He only cares about his goals.’
But he celebrated, and I doubt those same people will spend much time talking about that.
That’s the strange thing about Cristiano. Sometimes people have already decided what kind of person he is, and they’re only waiting for something that confirms it.
I remember telling him earlier, ‘You know, when you reach a thousand, somebody will probably ask why you didn’t score them sooner.’
He laughed.
But I wasn’t entirely joking.
He’s 20 goals away from something nobody has ever achieved at this level. I think people should enjoy watching that happen, even if he isn’t their favourite player.
Because one day Cristiano will stop scoring, and everybody will suddenly remember how extraordinary it was.
Before we separated, I asked him, ‘Cristiano, when you reach a thousand, will you finally be satisfied?’
He looked at me like I’d asked him to retire.
I think that was my answer.”
When the moment demanded courage, he never hid. He was Fearless, Reliable & Inevitable. That’s Cristiano Ronaldo 🐐🥰
You can never re-write history cuz he will forever be HIM. Until the end idolo 🐐❤️
Lyrics was written by Baba Awolowo.
Late Pa Hubert Ogunde, pioneer of Nigeria's theatre Arts cum fierce Awoist, composed the tune for Awolowo FREE OF CHARGE.
It became the anthem for Egbe Omo Oduduwa, Action Group, Afenifere, Osun state anthem and now, Official Southwest anthem. Late Rotimi Aketi even forced ALL SCHOOLS to sing it daily b4 his health got worse. Are @drobafemihamzat % @Sen_AdeolaYAYI paying attention?
If u can't sing it offhand, ur initiation into Nationalism isn't complete. 😁. More importantly, u should not even be Councillor without singing it offhand. O ni reason!
NOTE- Asiwaju sings ALL stanzas offhand.
For me and she didn't want me to fall victim of the society as I was growing up in one of the craziest hood in Lagos (MAJIDUN-OGOLONTO 🌚).
I still remember this anthem and many other ones we were thought like twas yesterday and I still sing them at random lol😂 ANTP! PROGRESS!
Yoo.. I couldn't help the goosebumps nor hold back the tears seeing and singing along to this.
To think I was just in JSS2 back then when I joined a theater group back then in Ikorodu. My bosses name was OPEYEMI MAJEK, the son to late veteran actor Ogun Majek! (RIP).
Nostalgic memories and goosebumps as Nollywood actors sang Chief Hubert Ogunde troop in 1960
Thanks to our Nollywood actors for bringing this to bear.
Songs like this gives present generation insight on how deep Yorùbá song has been. It's also tell the music prowess and how legendary Pa Ogunde was, during his time on earth
If she catches a glimpse of me going for rehearsals (which was at my sec school and Palace Ori-Okuta Ikorodu) or in the studio back then. I was only allowed to take part in church plays lol 😆. Stopped acting then and hated myself for a very long time. She only wanted the best
