My former @LSEsociology colleague, Chris Husbands, was a pioneering researcher on right wing extremism. When some would suggest that it was a very 1980s phenomenon, he would quote Berthold Brecht: 'The womb from which that crawled is still fertile'.
following news labour govt will increase raids throughout summer these from @AntiRaids are vital. get yourself tooled up, tell your friends and your community. join your local anti raids network. when we come out in numbers and resist, we win.
Housing & planning were top of Labour's agenda in yesterday's King's Speech. Much of what was announced was expected. The new government's approach is sober. It's a 360 look at the housing market, tackling everything except demand 🧵https://t.co/ibeFs6u0Es
We're pleased to see a documentary being made about the experiences of migrant women working in the UK care sector, addressing the issues of exploitation and loneliness.
Documentary makers, Helen Spooner and Lotje Sodderland are looking to hear from carers themselves, with interviews guaranteed to be anonymous and translation also provided.
New op-ed out today by @ZoeJardiniere in @BigIssue talks about the opportunity the next Government has to reverse the changes made to the domestic worker visa 12 years ago trapping workers. Shoutout also @mrmfr for his work showing abuse rates rocketing with his data analysis 📈
As today's International Domestic Workers Day, it's worth remembering that Labour's 2017 & 2019 manifestos pledged to reform the domestic worker visa, removing the conditions that put workers at risk of modern slavery.
There's no such pledge in this year's Labour manifesto.
OUT TODAY our report #12yearsofmodernslavery exposes the myths used to deny rights to domestic workers since 2012, trapping them with abusive employers. This cannot continue. We urge the incoming Govt to reinstate rights & protect all workers. Report here: https://t.co/SZen4e1d2v
Good to see Labour promise to investigate treatment of migrant care workers and recommit to a new single enforcement body. From existing research we know it’s also crucial that this body is separated from immigration enforcement to allow safe reporting, /1 https://t.co/FPXeh1ncE1
Not biggest problem with National Service by far but forcing the young to “volunteer” unpaid for the NHS further encourages the idea the health service is a charity. The NHS isn’t some large scale philanthropic project - it’s a professional body that needs funding and standards.
@DrEllaC@MSHelpline@ESRC@SabraMBoyd@EYAlbright@AlysMcAlpine Excellent article Ella and @Lisa_Tompson!
High proportion of English potential victims for DS goes against stereotypes & curious about 'Helpline staff explained that callers reporting domestic servitude are often close to a family exploiting someone'. Colleagues? Family members?
Let's tell the newly appointed mayors we want right to buy paused.
I've just signed this petition. Will you add your name and share too? Lets test their powers - sign & share widely
