When people build or donate infrastructure in Africa, they scarcely read the environment, and even most African architects scarcely do it either. The result is boxy buildings with tiny openings, painted white or some bright color to look finished. Rain and harmattan dust wear that paint down fast, and repainting or repairing it is upkeep most local communities cannot sustain. So the buildings age badly, not because the climate is harsh, but because the design never accounted for who would maintain it.

The reverse is true for this Tanzanian project.

Wayair School, Ulyankulu, a former refugee settlement in western Tanzania. Jeju Studio, a Polish practice, designed it for the Wayair Foundation. The building is made of locally crafted brick, fired from two different clays, dark red made onsite, lighter red made in a nearby valley, arranged into a gradient rather than painted over. Nothing here needs paint to survive weather, the material carries its own finish and ages into the landscape instead of against it.

The classrooms sit around a courtyard wrapped around existing mango trees, modeled on the local Saturday market where the whole community already gathers under big trees. Roofs are pitched with a ventilation gap at the peak, thick concrete floors hold the classrooms cool through the day, no mechanical cooling anywhere. A 70,000 litre rainwater harvesting system, filled in one short rainy season, carries the school through nine months of dry season.

This is what happens when a design team reads the site, the climate, and the community before drawing a single wall.

I came across these fascinating examples of Dahomey architecture on pages 157–158 of Africa Dances: A Book About West African Negroes by Geoffrey Gorer. The images show the Palace of Glélé at Abomey, along with some of his descendants.

The royal architecture of Dahomey always stands out to me because its motifs preserves the power, history, and identity through its design.

Le Burkina Faso a franchi une étape majeure en matière de souveraineté sanitaire. Le 7 juillet 2026, l’équipe de chirurgie thoracique et vasculaire du CHU de Tengandogo a réalisé avec succès la première sleeve lobectomie bronchique du pays.

Cette intervention de haute précision a permis de retirer une tumeur pulmonaire tout en préservant le poumon de la patiente, évitant ainsi une pneumonectomie totale. L’opération, conduite par le Dr Moussa Bazongo avec l’appui de la mission médicale chinoise (Dr Jiang Lei) et du Dr J. Maoro Bolivogui, concernait une volumineuse tumeur de la bronche lobaire inférieure gauche. Cette prouesse technique illustre les progrès du plateau médical national et réduit le recours aux évacuations sanitaires à l’étranger. #Saheliens
