इस्लाम अद्भुत है, और एक यूनानी होने के नाते मेरे पास कुछ वास्तविक इतिहास साझा करने के लिए है, जिससे यह सिद्ध किया जा सके कि इस्लाम हमारी दुनिया के लिए सबसे अच्छी चीज़ है।

उस्मानी काल में मुसलमानों द्वारा दी जाने वाली सबसे आम यातना कोड़े मारना थी। इसके सामान्य शिकार ईसाई होते थे।

यह लगभग हर दूसरी यातना की भूमिका हुआ करती थी। ईसाइयों पर होने वाले अत्याचारों में यह इतनी आम थी कि एक कहावत ही बन गई थी-
“मैं तुम्हें तब त�� कोड़े मारूँगा, जब तक तुम अपना धर्म न बदल लो।”

पीड़ित को पीठ नंगी करके बाँध दिया जाता था, उसके कपड़े फाड़ दिए जाते थे और फिर कोड़े मारना शुरू होता था। जल्लाद प्रायः मजबूत शरीर वाले तुर्क सैनिक होते थे, इसलिए प्रहार बहुत कठोर और शक्तिशाली होते थे।

कोड़ों की संख्या या तो अदालत द्वारा पहले से तय होती थी या (अधिकतर मामलों में) जल्लादों के विवेक पर छोड़ दी जाती थी। मुस्लिम न्यायाधीश (क़ाज़ी) इस या��ना को देखते रहते थे।

यदि पीड़ित यह दिखा देता कि वह निर्धारित संख्या के कोड़े सहन नहीं कर पाएगा और उसकी जान को तत्काल खतरा है, तो न्यायाधीश जल्लाद की बगल के नीचे क़ुरान रख देता था।

चूँकि पवित्र ग्रंथ को ज़मीन पर गिरने नहीं दिया जा सकता था, इसलिए जल्लाद अपना हाथ ऊँ��ा नहीं उठा पाता और शेष कोड़े कम ज़ोर से मारता।

कोड़े लगने के बाद पीड़ित को अक्सर बिना किसी देखभाल के असहाय छोड़ दिया जाता था या जेल में फेंक दिया जाता था। अधिकांश मामलों में शरीर पर स्थायी अपंगताएँ रह जाती थीं।

उस्मानी मुसलमानों की सबसे क्रूर यातनाओं में से एक थी, सूली पर चढ़ाना (नुकीले खंभे में गाड़ना)। भीड़ पीड़ित को घेर लेती थी और उसका मज़ाक उड़ाती थी, उसे इस्लाम स्वीकार करने की सलाह देत�� थी और उसके धर्म, परिवार तथा राष्ट्रीयता का अपमान करती थी।

खंभे एक निश्चित स्थान पर लगाए जाते थे, अक्सर गाँव या कस्बे के चौक में। पीड़ित को सार्वजनिक अपमान के साथ वहाँ घसीट कर लाया जाता था।

भारी कोड़े मारने के बाद उसके कपड़े फाड़ दिए जाते थे, हाथों को पीठ के पीछे कसकर बाँध दिया जाता था और उसे खंभे पर “बिठा” दिया जाता था।

फिर उसके पैरों में वज़न बाँध दिए जाते थे ताकि वह फिसलता हुआ नीचे जाए और ��ंभे में आर-पार गड़ जाए।

कई मामलों में यह क्रूरता यहीं समाप्त नहीं होती थी। खंभे (जिस पर पीड़ित लटका होता था) को आग या जलते अंगारों के ऊपर क्षैतिज रूप से रखा जाता था और पीड़ित को मेमने की तरह ज़िंदा भून दिया जाता था।

योआनिना का भयावह और कुख्यात अली पाशा अपने शिकारों को धीरे-धीरे भूनने के लिए प्रसिद्ध था, वह अंगारों को पतला कर देता था ताकि पीड़ा अधिक समय तक चले और स्वयं तथा अपने साथियों का मनोरं���न होता रहे।

कई मामलों में वह रिश्तेदारों को मजबूर करता था कि वे स्वयं अपने ही परिजनों को यातना दें और मार डालें, ताकि वे खुद सूली पर चढ़ाए जाने और ज़िंदा जलाए जाने से बच सकें।
