Featuring some insights from Richard Mayer's Handbook on Multimedia Learning.
There's something touchingly humble about a conference that doesn't take it self so seriously that it can pack itself away. A beautiful self-organising system. Would other conferences be more credible if this were the norm? #yfs2020
Hypothesis: struck by clarity, passion & as a consequence, inspiration of speakers at #yfs2020. Crucially all also seeking to solve a concrete problem. Might the best missions & visions perhaps benefit from a unifying, purposeful, clear problem(s) to solve.
Fascinating seeing the growth in confidence (and number of) student speakers over the last three years as the exceptional becomes the expectation. Where next? #yfs2020
@MrTTattle @FabioParon1 @ClintMcCowan Lesson 2: while sarcasm may not be an area of knowledge, it is perhaps a methodology of expression within the area of knowledge of the arts. And, the last sentence is meta-satirical. And, the last sentence is meta-satirical. Synergy.
@zoebadcock @DaveSecomb@Dequanne@EdSurge Lessons for our updated mission: build shared understanding, strategically match form & function, & have ways of knowing impact (in/directly). It's easy to think we're doing something when, in reality, we don't know, especially when that thing is abstract & glitteringly virtuous.
Interesting, detailed review, with implications for use (or not) of flipped classrooms, and other suggestions for benefits of retrieval practice (frequent, low stakes) and ideal group sizes for challenging, intellectual discussions (5-7 suggested).
A review of research on "flipped" classrooms finds that there is little evidence either way about impact on student achievement, and most studies are so poorly theorized that studies are difficult, if not impossible, to compare: https://t.co/LUzCtEINlJ
Useful guide to writing blogs and op-ed pieces from @ulrichboser and his colleagues: https://t.co/OwOexy9PPG. Even if you don't use it, it may change the way that you look at other blogs and op-ed pieces...
Quiz procedure that has been working in physics class:
- make 4 quizzes and have students do 1
- return them as soon as possible
- allow students to attempt a different quiz when they demonstrate learning

Yes indeed to those who asked: I’m writing a sequel to The #HandmaidsTale. #TheTestaments is set 15 years after Offred’s final scene and is narrated by three female characters. It will be published in Sept 2019. More details: https://t.co/e1umh5FwpX
#eagleed another interesting paper which pose fundamental questions about any given school's vision and purpose. Takes a lot of institutional confidence to know which path to take, and hold course.
Increased use of student-centered teaching methods is linked to increased student wellbeing but lower achievement, which in turn, link to increased adult life satisfaction, but lower earnings—the "achievement-wellbeing tradeoff", discussed by @CfEdnEcon: https://t.co/81hXMr90A4
@Elfdaws @MrTTattle Well @dylanwiliam might well agree with you about extensive written, individualized comments. An expensive PR exercise? Challenge is to break habits, change expectations and dependencies, and construct assessment and feedback experiences that move the learners forward.
@rpondiscio Most leaders try to improve schools by looking for unproductive things to stop doing. There aren't enough of them to make a difference. The essence of effective leadership is stopping teachers doing good things, to give them more time to spend on even better things.
@MrTTattle 2) it's even harder to meaningfully encode complexity of (flawed) judgements of learning into singular letters, numbers, emojis, dots on a line. Of course, we are beguiled by its convenient simplicity and our meritocratic desire to rank and sort uni apps, job apps etc.
@MrTTattle Certainly. Though disentangling assessment (evidence based feedback cycles) from grades (coded judgements of learning) helps. Two fundamental issue: 1) it's v. hard to design contextualized valid, reliable assessments...
