Major Milestone: Zimbabwe’s Blueberries Break Into the Chinese Market with Zero-Tariff Advantage.
Zimbabwe’s horticultural sector has achieved a historic breakthrough, officially marking the first-ever shipment of fresh blueberries to China. This milestone follows the landmark 2025 phytosanitary agreement and is now significantly bolstered by China’s recent zero-tariff policy for African nations, which took effect on May 1, 2026.
The Zero-Tariff Advantage
The elimination of import duties under China’s trade policy for 53 African countries is a game-changer for Zimbabwean farmers.
Cost Efficiency: By removing tariff barriers, the policy slashes the per-container cost of importing fresh fruit into China by approximately 17%, making Zimbabwean produce significantly more competitive against other global suppliers.
Strategic Access: This policy aligns with the bilateral agreement signed in September 2025, which paved the way for legal, regulated trade. It opens a massive consumer base of 1.4 billion people to Zimbabwean exporters, effectively positioning the country as a premium supplier in the Asian market.
