얼마 전 SHIFTUP의 부사장이 되었습니다.

축하해주신 많은 분들께 진심으로 감사드립니다.

승진은 기쁜 일이지만, 사실 처음 제안을 받았을 때 고민이 많았습니다. 새로운 직함이 주는 무게감이 있기에 가볍게 받아들일 수 있는 문제는 아니었습니다.

생각은 자연스럽게 제가 지금까지 게임을 만들어온 시간으로 이어졌습니다.

게임 개발자로 일한 지 16년, 게임 개발을 지망하던 시작점부터는 25년이 넘었습니다. 그 시간 끝에 만난 NIKKE와도 개발부터 지금까지 벌써 6~7년을 함께하고 있습니다.

돌이켜보면 그동안 제가 쌓아온 경험과 생각, 그리고 제 삶의 많은 부분을 NIKKE에 쏟아온 것 같습니다. NIKKE를 만드는 일이 곧 제 일상이었고, 그 과정에서 제 인생도 많이 달라졌습니다.

그래서 이제 저에게 NIKKE는 단순히 제가 맡고 있는 하나의 프로젝트라고 말하기 어렵습니다. 제 인생의 전부, 혹은 인생 그 자체라고 해도 과언이 아닐 것 같습니다.

그만큼 부사장이라는 자리를 받아들이는 데에도 고민이 깊었습니다. 하지만 결국 NIKKE가 제 삶에서 차지하는 의미를 생각했을 때, 이번 변화 역시 제가 NIKKE와 함께 걸어가는 과정에서 받아들여야 할 일이라고 생각했습니다.

아마 이번 소식을 듣고 제가 NIKKE에서 멀어지는 것은 아닌지 걱정하시는 분들도 계시는 것으로 알고 있습니다.

하지만 제가 스스로 NIKKE에 방해가 되는 사람이라고 생각하게 되지 않는 한, NIKKE의 디렉터업무는 계속 수행할 예정입니다.

앞으로도 NIKKE와 함께 잘 부탁드리겠습니다.

이번 일을 축하해 주신 분들께 다시 한번 감사드립니다.

Some people under my previous post saying „SONY WILL FALL” argued that Sony is much more than just a console company. That’s true and that’s my bad. I kept the original post possiblr short, so here’s the bigger picture.

Where does Sony make its money and how dependent are they on PlayStation?

1. Gaming & Network Services – Sony’s biggest revenue and profit engine. This is their equivalent of Microsoft’s Office or Azure. The problem? Growth is slowing. Every generation they failed to expand the console audience in a meaningful way, while game budgets have exploded to $200–300 million. A few major flops can quickly turn into a serious financial problem. Their current dominance is largely built on the foundation laid during previous generations. Looking ahead, I expect growth to stall and margins to come under increasing pressure.

2. Imaging & Sensing – Sony supplies camera sensors to companies like Apple and many others. This is one of Sony’s strongest long term busineses and could eventually rival or even surpass Gaming. However, it still depends on manufacturers continuing to choose Sony over competitors.

3. Sony Music – Arguably Sony’s strongest and safest division. With decades of acquisitions, publishing rights and record labels, Sony has an enormous moat here. This business isn’t going anywhere.

4. Entertainment, Technology & Services – TVs, headphones, cameras and consumer electronics. Once an industry leader, today Sony is fighting in highly competitive markets. They no longer dominate TVs or smartphones and most growth now comes from a handful of premium products.

5. Sony Pictures – A volatile business. Some years are highly profitable, others aren’t. It’s heavily dependent on blockbuster franchises, while Crunchyroll and anime licensing are becoming increasingly important growth drivers.

The conclusion is simple:

Yes, Sony has multiple businesses.

But Gaming is still the pillar that finances the company.

If PlayStation starts losing momentum, there is no other division capable of replacing those profits overnight. That’s why PlayStation matters far more to Sony than Xbox does to Microsoft.

The next generation could be the biggest test yet. If console prices approach or exceed $1,000, while Sony continues pushing consumers toward an all digital ecosystem, many people will think twice before investing. Customers can delay upgrading, stay for first on PS5, move to PC or look elsewhere.

Sony isn’t “just a console company.”

But PlayStation is still the engine that keeps the company running. And if that engine starts failing, every alarm bell inside Sony will start ringing.
