ॐ शान्तिः शान्तिः शान्तिः !!!
"कठोपनिषद् - द्वितीयाध्याये: तृतीयवल्ली"
कठोपन���षद्: सम्पूर्ण : ॐ तत् सत् !

यह उपनिषद् का समापन शान्ति-मंत्र है, एक ऐसा आध्यात्मिक संकल्प, जिसमें गुरु और शिष्य दोनों सामूहिक रूप से सनातन तत्त्व और ब्रह्मविद्या के लिए समर्पित हैं। यहाँ ज्ञान-साधना को केवल व्यक्तिगत नहीं, बल्कि सह-यात्रा माना गया है।

भगवद्पाद आदि शंकराचार्य कहते हैं कि यह मंत्र तीन उद्देश्यों से बोला जाता है; पहला “सह नाववतु" - परमात्मा हम दोनों की रक्षा करे। ज्ञान का मार्ग सूक्ष्म है; साधक को भीतर-बाहर दोनों तरह की सुरक्षा चाहिए - मन की भी, परिस्थितियों की भी। दूसरा “सह नौ भुनक्तु” - हम दोनों को पोषण दे। यहाँ पोषण का अर्थ है कि बुद्धि का पोषण, विवेक का पोषण और सतत् ��ध्यात्मिक ऊर्जा का पोषण और तीसरा “सह वीर्यं करवावहै” - हम मिलकर साहस और शक्ति से साधना करें। भगवान आदि शंकराचार्य कहते हैं कि ज्ञान का उदय वीर्य, अर्थात् धैर्य, एकाग्रता और निरन्तरता के बिना सम्भव नहीं। “तेजस्विनावधीतमस्तु" - हमारा अध्ययन तेजस्वी हो। अर्थात् मन में आलस्य, भ्रम या अवरोध न आए; ज्ञान स्पष्ट, दीप्त और शुद्ध बने। “मा विद्विषावहै” - हम एक-दूसरे से मत्सर, विवाद या दुर्भावना न रखें, ���्योंकि गुरु शिष्य की अनश्रद्धा ज्ञान का सबसे बड़ा अवरोध है। भाष्यकार आदि शंकराचार्य इस मंत्र को “अद्वैत-मार्ग की सहयात्रा” कहते हैं।

भगवद्गीता बार-बार कहती है कि “तद्विद्धि प्रणिपातेन परिप्रश्नेन सेवया” गुरु शिष्य का आदरपूर्ण सम्बन्ध ही ज्ञान का द्वार है। जहाँ मन में मत्सर, द्वेष नहीं, वहाँ ज्ञान प्रकट होता है - “अमानित्वमदम्भित्वम्…” यही “मा विद्विषावहै” का सार है।

ब्रह्मसूत्र क��ता है कि ज्ञान का उदय तभी होता है, जब वृत्ति-शुद्धि ��र अद्वेषभाव हो। गुरु शिष्य सम्बन्ध में अविश्वास या मत्सर हो, तो ब्रह्मविद्या का ग्रहण असम्भव है। इस मंत्र का उद्देश्य साधना के लिए सामूहिक मानसिक-शुद्धि तैयार करना है।

यह शान्ति-मंत्र हमें बताता है कि गुरु-शिष्य एक-दूसरे के भिन्न नहीं, बल्कि सत्य-यात्रा के सहयात्री हैं। ज्ञान रक्षा, पोषण, तेज, वीर्य और सौहार्द—इन पाँच तत्वों पर टिकता है। शान्ति अन्तःशान्ति, आधिदैविक शान्ति और आधिभौतिक श���न्ति इन तीनों के बिना आध्यात्मिक उन्नति सम्भव नहीं। इसलिए उपनिषद् का अन्तिम संदेश है - समन्वय, शान्ति और प्रकाश के सह-संकल्प से ही ब्रह्मज्ञान की प्राप्ति होती है।”

This concluding peace invocation expresses the ideal harmony between teacher and student, the essential condition for the transmission of Brahmavidyā.

Shankaracharya explains that the mantra seeks: Protection for both teacher and disciple (saha nāv avatu), Sustenance and inner nourishment (saha nau bhunaktu), Strength and courage in spiritual effort (saha vīryaṁ karavāvahai) Clarity and brilliance in understanding (tejasvināv adhītam astu), Freedom from conflict, ego, and misunderstanding (mā vidviṣāvahai). Only in such purity of relationship can the highest truth be realized.

The Bhagavad Gira echoes the same spirit: knowledge arises through humility, service, and harmony never through rivalry or inner hostility. The Brahma-sutras affirm that purity of mind and mutual goodwill are necessary for the rise of true knowledge.

This final mantra is not merely a prayer it is the foundation of the entire Upanishadic path: Let teacher and student walk together in protection, strength, clarity, and harmony. Where there is unity and peace, Brahma-vidyā blossoms.

श्री सालासर बालाजी धाम, जिला–चूरू (राजस्थान) में “अवधेशानन्दजी मिशन” एवं “प्रभु प्रेमी संघ चैरिटेबल ट्रस्ट” के पावन तत्वावधान में आद्यकवि महर्षि वाल्मीकि विरचित श्रीमद्वाल्मीकीय रामायण पर आधारित “श्रीराम कथा” का दिव्य आध्यात्मिक अनुष्ठान अत्यंत श्रद्धाभाव और उत्सव के परम उत्साह के साथ आरंभ हुआ।

के श्रीमुख से निःसृत अमृतवाणी ने श्रोताओं के हृदय को गहन आध्यात्मिक अनुभूति से भाव विभोर कर दिया।

पूज्य आचार्यश्री ने उद्घोष किया -रामो विग्रहवान��� धर्मः”।
भगवान श्रीराम मर्यादा, संयम और धर्म के साकार स्वरूप हैं। वे भारत के प्रभात के प्रथम स्वर, जीवन के परम आदर्श तथा कर्तव्य, आचरण और आदर्श के जीवंत प्रतिमान हैं। श्रीराम सनातन संस्कृति के सर्वोच्च मानदण्ड हैं जहाँ धर्म केवल उपदेश नहीं, बल्कि जीवन का सहज आचरण बन जाता है।

महादेव के स्वरूप का विवेचन करते हुए पूज्य आचार्यश्री ने कहा कि भगवान शिव ईशान, अघोर, देवसाक्षी, कर्मसाक्षी, युगसाक्���ी और ईशसाक्षी हैं। वही महादेव हनुमान रूप में, “किं पुरुष” बनकर, सेवक भाव से भगवान की सेवा में अवतरित होते हैं ; यह भक्ति और करुणा का परम आदर्श है।

वेद-विचार पर प्रकाश ��ालते हुए उन्होंने कहा कि गायत्री वेदों का सार है। वेद श्रवण की परंपरा हैं इसीलिए वेद सन्त-सत्पुरुषों के सान्निध्य में सुने जाते हैं। जीवन में सन्त का आगमन समस्त परिस्थितियों को अनुकूल बना देता है। सत्य के बिना न धन आता है, न ऐश्वर्य, न लक्ष्मी का वास होता है। सत्य का अनुसरण ही श्री-प्राप्ति का मूल है।

प्रणाम को हमारी संस्कृति की महान साधना बताते हुए पूज्य आचार्यश्री ने विनय के महत्व पर बल दिया। करसा, उरसा, सिरसा, मनसा, वाचसा, आत्म-प्रणाम और साष्टांग प्रणाम की विविध विधियाँ सद्गुरु सिखाते हैं। नित्य माता-पिता, गुरु और ज्येष्ठजनों को प्रणाम करने से आयु, विद्या, यश और बल की प्राप्ति होती है; विनय से बड़ा कोई साधन नहीं।

सन्त, गुरु और ग्रन्थ के निकट बैठने से जीवन में प्रकाश आता है। श्रवण और मनन से सत्य का बोध होता है। उन्होंने स्मरण कराया कि सबसे कठिन साधना भगवन्नाम-स्मरण और मंत्र-जप ��ै, क्योंकि मन व्यर्थ की बातों, निन्दा ��र सांसारिक प्रपंचों में उलझा रहता है। अतः अहर्निश जिह्वा से हरिनाम का जप करते रहना ही मुक्ति का सरल मार्ग है।

आनन्द-तत्त्व की व्याख्या करते हुए पूज्य आचार्यश्री ने कहा कि हमारी सत्ता मूलतः आनन्दस्वरूप है इसीलिए ब्रह्म को ‘आनन्द’ कहा गया है। भौतिक उपलब्धियाँ क्षणिक सुख देती हैं, पर पूर्ण आनन्द का बोध केवल सच्चिदानन्द से संभव है। शुभ विचारों और सद्संकल्पों से मन का रूपांतरण ही सच्ची सफलता का द्वार खोलता है।

“राम जनम के हेतु अनेका…” भगवान के अवतार के अनेक कारणों का वर्णन करते हुए उन्होंने जगत को माया का भ्रम बताया। जो कुछ भी दृष्टिगोचर है, वह भगवान की माया है अनित्य और अपूर्ण। परमात्मा नित्य, पूर्ण, पूर्णकाम, आप्तकाम और निष्काम हैं। देवर्षि नारद के माया-मोह प्रसंग के माध्यम से पूज्य आचार्यश्री ने माया की शक्ति और उससे उबरने के विवेक का अत्यंत प्रभावशाली निरूपण किया। इसी के साथ प्रथम दिवस की कथा श्रद्धा ��र वैराग्य के भाव में सम्पन्न हुई।

मृत्युप्रोक्तां नचिकेतोऽथ लब्ध्वा
विद्यामेतां योगविधिं च कृत्स्नम् ।
ब्रह्मप्राप्तो विरजोऽभूद्विमृत्यु-रन्योऽप्येवं यो विदध्यात्ममे�� ।।१८।।
"कठोपनिषद् - द्वितीयाध्याये: तृतीयवल्ली"

यह उपनिषद् का उपसंहार है - ज्ञान, योग और मुक्ति की पूर्ण घोषणा। यमराज द्वारा प्रदत्त ब्रह्मविद्या और सम्पूर्ण योगविधि को प्राप्त कर नचिकेता ब्रह्मप्राप्त,
विरजः (राग-रहित), और विमृत्युः (मृत्यु-रहित) हुआ। उपनिषद् कहता है कि जो कोई भी उसी प्रकार आत्मज्ञान का अभ्यास करेगा, वह भी इसी अवस्था को प्राप्त होगा।

भगवद्पादाचार्य कहते हैं कि "मृत्य���प्रोक्ताम् विद्याम्” नचिकेता को जो ज्ञान मिला वह साधारण उपदेश नहीं, बल्कि ब्रह्मस्वरूप का प्रत्यक्ष बोध कराने वाली परविद्या थी। "योगविधिं कृत्स्नम्” इसमें श्रवण मनन निदिध्यासन, इन्द्रिय-निग्रह, मन-शुद्धि और ध्यान-साधना आदि सम्मिलित हैं। यह सम्पूर्ण अद्वैत साधना है। "ब्रह्मप्राप्तः” यह प्राप्ति किसी गमन से नहीं होती। आत्मा तो सदैव ब्रह्म ही है। आदि शंकराचार्य कहते हैं कि ज्ञान केवल अविद्या-नाश है, जिससे जीव का ब्रह्मभाव प्रकट होता है। “विरजः”—सभी राग-द्वेष, वासनाएँ और कामनाएँ समाप्त। ”विमृत्युः” देह से आगे स्थित आत्मस्वरूप में प्रतिष्ठा; जहाँ जन्म–मरण का चक्र नहीं पहुँचता।

भगवद्गीता भी यही सत्य दोहराती है कि ब्रह्मभूतः प्रसन्नात्मा न शोचति न काङ्क्षति” ब्रह्मभ��व में स्थित साधक राग-मोह से मुक्त होता है। “यो मां एवम् वेत्ति” जो ज्ञान और योग को सम्यक् समझता है, वह मुक्ति को प्राप्त होता है । गीता का ज्ञानयोग ध्यानयोग समत्वयोग वही “योगविधिं कृत्स्नम्” है जिसका उल्लेख उपनिषद् करता है।

ब्रह्मसूत्र कहता है कि "अविद्यानिवृत्तिः कैवल्यम्” अज्ञान के नष्ट होते ही जीव ब्रह्मस्वरूप में स्थित होता है। ज्ञान ही मुक्ति का कारण है; कर्म केवल मन-पवित्रता और य��ग्यता प्रदान करते हैं। नचिकेता की मुक्ति इसका प्रत्यक्ष उदाहरण है। इस���िए सूक्ष्म अर्थ में “ब्रह्मप्राप्ति” ब्रह्मस्वरूप की पहचान है।

यह मंत्र उपनिषद् के साधन सिद्धि फलों का अन्तिम निष्कर्ष प्रस्तुत करता है !नचिकेता ने ब्रह्मविद्या और योग का संपूर्ण मार्ग पाया। ज्ञान के उदय से वह राग-मुक्त, मृत्यु-मुक्त और ब्रह्म-स्वरूप हुआ। उपनिषद् का वचन है कि जो भी इसी प्रकार आत्मविद्या का अभ्यास करेगा, वह भी उसी अमर पद को प्राप्त होगा।

This closing mantra of the Upanishad celebrates the consummation of knowledge and yoga. Nachiketas, having received from Yama the complete knowledge of the Self and the entire discipline of Yoga, became: Brahma-prāpta established in Brahman. Virajaḥ free from all impurities and desires .Vimṛtyuḥ beyond the reach of deat. The Upanishad concludes: Anyone who practices this teaching in the same spirit attains the very same state.

Adi Shankaracharya explains:
Mṛtyu-proktāṁ vidyām” Yama imparted not mere theory, but the highest Brahmavidyā, the knowledge that destroys ignorance at its root.” Yoga-vidhiṁ kṛtsnam” the complete discipline of inner purification: śravaṇa (listening), manana (reflection), nididhyāsana (deep meditation), sense-restraint, steadiness of mind, and discrimination. “Brahma-prāptaḥ” does not mean “reaching Brahman” as a place; rather, it means realizing one’s own identity with Brahman, which was always present. “Virajaḥ” freed from all rāga, dveṣa, and latent impressions.” Vimṛtyuḥ” transcending mortality through Self-knowledge; the realized being no longer identifies with the perishable body. This is liberation here and now.

This mantra delivers the Upanishad’s final conclusion:
Nachiketas mastered the complete knowledge of the Self and the total discipline of Yoga. His ignorance vanished; he became pure and immortal. Anyone who follows this same inner discipline becomes deathless, attaining the realization of Brahman.
Thus ends the great teaching:
Self-knowledge is liberation.
What Nachiketas reached, any seeker can reach.

अङ्गुष्ठमात्रः पुरुषोऽन्तरात्मा सदा जनानां हृदये संनिविष्टः।
तं स्वाच्छरीरात्प्रवृहेन्मुञ्जादिवेषीकां धैर्येण।
तं विद्याच्छुक्रममृतं तं विद्याच्छुक्रममृतमिति ।।१७।।
"कठोपनिषद् - द्वितीयाध्याये: तृतीयवल्ली"

यह मंत्र आत्मा की अन्तर्यता और दिव्य स्वरूप का अत्यन्त सुन्दर उद्घाटन है। उपनिषद् कहता है - "अंतर्यामी आत्मा अंगुष्ठमा��्र प्रतीत होता है, क्योंकि वह हृदय-प्रदेश में उपाधियों (देह-मन-बुद्धि से आवृत्त है। वह वास्तव में अनन्त, अद्वैत, स्वयंज्योति है, परन्तु साधक के अंतर्मन में वह एक छोटे बिन्दु समान प्रकाश की भाँति अनुभवित होता है।"

भगवद्पाद शंकराचार्य बताते हैं कि “अंगुष्ठमात्रः” का अर्थ आकार नहीं, बल्कि उपाधि-निमित्त प्रतीति है। आत्मा का कोई रूप नहीं; यह केवल अनुभूति का संकेत है। “हृदये संनिविष्टः” आत्मा किसी स्थ��न में स्थित नहीं, पर हृदय चित्त की शुद्ध अवस्था का प्रतीक है।

“मुञ्जादिवेषीकां प्रवृहेत्” जैसे मुञ्जा घास से वेत्र-रेशा अलग की जाती है, वैसे ही साधक को धैर्य, वैराग्य और विवेक से शरीर उपाधियों को हटाकर अपने शुद्ध आत्मस्वरूप का बोध करना चाहिए। आदि शंकराचार्य कहते हैं कि उसी आत्मा को “शुक्रम” शुद्ध, कलंकरहित और “अमृतम्”नित्य, अविनाशी जानना चाहिए।

श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता कहती है कि “हृदि सर्वस���य विष्ठितो” - भगवान सभी के हृदय में स्थित हैं। गीता में यही आत्मा “क्षेत्रज्ञ” कहलाता है; जो देह, मन, और ��ुद्धि का साक्षी है। गीता बताती है कि मन-शुद्धि और ध्यान के माध्यम से साधक उसी हृदय-स्थित, द्युति-स्वरूप आत्मा को अनुभव करता है।

ब्रह्मसूत्र कहते हैं कि आत्मा सर्वव्यापी है; “हृदय” केवल अनुभूति का आधार-स्थान है। ”अङ्गुष्ठमात्रः” उपनिषदों की उपाधि-आधारित प्रतीक-भाषा है। उसमें वास्तविक आकार का विधान नहीं। आत्मा को जानने का उपाय है कि उपाधियों का निरसन, विचार की तीक्ष्णता, ध्यान का धैर्य, जो “मुञ्जा-उपमा” से व्यक्त किया गया है।

यह मंत्र साधक को बताता है कि आत्मा हृदय में अनुभूति के रूप में निकट है। उसका आकार नहीं, वह असीम, शुद्ध, अमृत है। देह उपाधियों को धैर्य और विवेक से हटाकर उसे पहचानना ही ज्ञान-साधना है। जिस आत्मा को “शुद्ध” और “अमृत” रूप में जाना जाए, वही ब्रह्म, वही जीवन का परम सत्य है।

This beautiful mantra describes the inner Self the light of consciousness residing in the “heart,” appearing small like the size of a thumb, yet truly infinite. The Upanishad instructs the seeker to separate this pure Self from the body with patience and discrimination, just as the fine fibre is carefully drawn out of the muñja grass. This Self is pure (śukra), stainless, and immortal (amṛta).

Adi Shankaracharya clarifies:
“Aṅguṣṭha-mātraḥ” does not mean the Self has a size. It appears “thumb-sized” only due to the limitations of the heart-region, the field of inner experience. The Self is actually formless, infinite, all-pervading.
“Hṛdaye sanniviṣṭaḥ” the Self is not confined to the heart; the heart symbolizes the subtle inner space where pure awareness is realized. Pravṛhet muñjādiveṣīkām” the muñja-fibre analogy teaches that, with courage, steadiness, and discrimination, the seeker must separate the pure Self from body-identification, just as one draws the inner fibre out of the grass without breaking it.
Shankaracharya emphasizes that this inner Self is Surka- pure, stainless, untouched, Amrita eternal, immortal, unchanging. Knowing this Self is liberation.

This mantra teaches: The inner Self shines in the “heart,” appearing small only due to mental conditioning. Through patience, discrimination, and inner purity, the Self must be distinguished from the body. This Self is pure, stainless, eternal, and immortal. To know this Self is to attain freedom and the highest truth.

यह मंत्र ब्रह्मज्ञान के रहस्य को अत्यन्त सुन्दर रूप से उद्घाटित करता है। उपनिषद् के ऋषि कहते हैं कि “मैं यह नहीं मानता कि मैं ब्रह्म को भलीभाँति जानता हूँ, और न ही मैं यह कह सकता हूँ कि मैं उसे नहीं जानता। जो इस प्रकार जानता है, वही वास्तव में जानता है।” यह वाक्य विरोधाभास नहीं, अद्वैत सत्य का सूक्ष्म संकेत है।

भगवत्पाद शंकराचार्य यहाँ ज्ञान के दो स्तरों का भेद स्पष्ट करते हैं - सगुण विषयगत ज्ञान (वृत्ति-ज्ञान) वह जो मन में विचार के रूप में आता है, ब्रह्म का यह ज��ञान पूर्ण नहीं।
स्वानुभव-रूप ज्ञान (अपरोक्षानुभूति) जहाँ ज्ञाता स्वयं ब्रह्म-स्वरूप में स्थित हो जाता है; यही वास्तविक ज्ञान है।

इसीलिए उपनिषद् कहता है - ब्रह्म को वस्तु की तरह “जानना” अज्ञान है। ब्रह्म को स्वयं के रूप में अनुभूत करना ज्ञान है। जहाँ ‘मैं जानता हूँ’ का अहंकार शेष हो, वहाँ ज्ञान सीमित है। जहाँ अहंकार विलीन वही ब्रह्मानुभूति है।

“वेद च - नो न वेदेति” का रहस्य जानता हूँ - क्य��ंकि मैं स्वरूपतः ब्रह्म हूँ। नहीं जानता, क्योंकि मन और वाणी वहाँ नहीं पहुँचते।

यह ज्ञान: अनुभव है, पर वर्णन नहीं; सत्ता है, पर विचार नहीं; प्रकाश है, पर प्रकाशक का भी प्रकाश है। अतः आत्म-बोध ही ब्रह्म-बोध है। जो जानने वाले को भी जलाकर विलीन कर दे वही ज्ञान है।

जिसे शब्द पकड़ न सकें, जिसे विचार बाँध न सके, जो स्वयं में स्वयं प्रकाशित है; वही ब्रह्म है। ब्रह्म को जानने का दावा अविद्या है। ब्रह्म में स्थित होने का मौन विद्या है। ब्रह्म वह नहीं, जिसे जाना जाए। ब्रह्म वही है, जो जानने वाले के रूप में सदैव विद्यमान है। जानकर भी जिसका जानना शेष रहे - वही ब्रह्मज्ञान है।”

“I do not think I know Brahman well; yet I do not think I do not know Him. He who understands this- knows Brahman. He who believes he fully knows does not.”

This mantra is one of the most profound declarations in all of Vedānta. It speaks from a dimension beyond the intellect.

The sage says: I cannot claim to know Brahman, for Brahman is not an object to be grasped by thought. I cannot claim to be ignorant, for Brahman is the very nature of my own consciousness. Thus knowledge of Brahman is: not conceptual, not descriptive, not mental. It is the Self’s recognition of Itself.

Adi Śhaṅkarācārya beautifully explains: To “know Brahman” as an idea is ignorance. To realize Brahman as one’s own Being is true knowledge. Where the ego claims: “I have understood Brahman,” there duality still persists; a “knower” separate from the “known.” True realization dawns only when the “I” that knows dissolves into pure Awareness.

Adi Śhaṅkarācārya calls this: Aprokshanubhuti immediate, direct Self-realization. The Paradox that Reveals Truth This mantra expresses the timeless Vedāntic paradox : Brahman is known by not knowing, and unknown by knowing. For whatever the mind knows is limited by the mind- and the Infinite cannot be confined.

Essence of the Teaching : Brahman is not something to be grasped - It is the One who grasps. Brahman cannot be learned - It can only be realized. The true knower of Brahman never claims to know.

यह मंत्र शरीर-चिन्तन के माध्यम से आत्मा की अन्तिम गति का वर्णन करता है। उपनिषद् कहता है कि हृदय से सौ नाड़ियाँ निकलती हैं। उनमें से एक ���ाड़ी (प्राणसूत्र) ऊपर ब्रह्मरन्ध्र की ओर जाती है। जब आत्मज्ञानी प्राणी का प्राण इसी ऊर्ध्व नाड़ी से प्रवाहित होता है, तब वह अमृतत्व, अर्थात् ब्रह्म–लोक एवं परमगति को प्राप्त करता है। अन्य नाड़ियों से प्राण के गमन से जीव को पुनर्जन्म के विविध मार्ग मिलते हैं।

भगवद्पादाचार्य इस मंत्र का विशिष्ट अर्थ देते हैं कि “शतं चैका” - हृदय से 101 नाड़ियाँ निकलती हैं। “एकैका मूर्धानम् अभिनिःसृता” - उनम���ं से केवल एक मुख्य नाड़ी ‘सुषुम्ना’ ब्रह्मरन्ध्र की ओर जाती है। आत्मज्ञानी के लिए यह नाड़ी “ज्ञात–मार्ग” बनती है; प्राण के इसी मार्ग से गमन करने पर जीव उपाधियों से मुक्त होकर परमात्मा में लीन होता है।

आदि शंकराचार्य स्पष्ट करते हैं कि यह ज्ञानवान साधक की देह-त्याग की स्थिति का प्रतीकात्मक वर्णन है। इस ऊर्ध्व-गति का अर्थ है कि ज्ञान के प्रकाश में चैतन्य का अपने मूल ब्रह्मस्वरूप में प्रवेश।

श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता में इसी सत्य को कहा गया है कि जो साधक जीवनभर मन को ब्रह्म पर स्थिर रखता है और देह त्याग के समय प्राण को ऊर्ध्वमार्ग में स्थिर करता है, वह परम पद को प्राप्त होता है। गीता इसे “ब्रह्ममार्ग”, “ऊर्ध्वगति” और “देवयान” के नाम से बताती है। विषय ग्रस्त मन पुनर्जन्म के निचले मार्गों में जाता है, जबकि ज्ञानयोगी की गति ऊर्ध्व दिशा में होती है।

ब्रह्मसूत्र में देह-त्याग के समय ज्ञानी और अज्ञानी की गति का उल्लेख है कि ज्ञानी के लिए ‘मार्ग’ महत्त्वहीन है, क्योंकि वह देह-प्राण-सम्बन्ध का अतिक्रमण कर चुका है फिर भी उपनिषद् का “ऊर्ध्व-नाड़ी” वर्णन प्रतीक है यह ज्ञान की उत्क��्ष दिशा का द्योतक है, न कि केवल शारीरिक प्रक्रिया। सूत्रकार कहते हैं कि ज्ञान के उदय से जीव ब्रह्मभाव को प्राप्त होता है; यही “अमृतत्व” है। इस मंत्र का सार है कि हृदय से अनेक नाड़ियाँ निकलती हैं, परन्तु ऊर्ध्वगामी नाड़ी ही ब्रह्म-प्राप्ति का सूचक है, जो साधक ज्ञानयुक्त है, उसका चैतन्य उसी मार्ग से अमृतभाव को प्राप्त करता है, अन्य नाड़ियों में प्रवाह पुनर्जन्म के मार्ग बनते हैं। यह शिक्षा प्���तीकात्मक रूप से कहती है - "आत्मज्ञान से मन ऊपर उठता है, वृत्तियाँ शान्त होती हैं, और साधक ब्रह्मस्वरूप में प्रतिष्ठित होता है।"

This mantra uses the language of yogic physiology to describe the final journey of consciousness. The Upanishad says that from the heart arise 101 nāḍīs (subtle channels).
Among them, one special nāḍī rises upward toward the crown of the head (brahmarandhra).
When the knower of the Self leaves the body through this upward path, he attains immortality. All other nāḍīs lead to various worlds and thereby to continued transmigration.

Adi Shankaracharya explains:
The “one upward nāḍī” is the path for the realized being, through which prāṇa moves upward at the time of death.
This “upward movement” does not merely describe a physical process; it symbolizes the ascent of consciousness, rising beyond body, senses, and mind. For the enlightened one: The prāṇa does not wander through lower channels, But dissolves into the highest Reality Brahman. Thus amṛtatva (immortality) here means identity with the eternal Self.

Bhagavad Gita describes the same principle: The yogi who fixes his mind on Brahman, And withdraws prāṇa into the suṣumṇā at the time of departure, Reaches the supreme state, the deva-yāna or “path of the gods.” Those whose minds remain attached to worldly desires move on other paths, resulting in rebirth.

The Brahma Sutras clarify: For the knower of Brahman, the physical mechanism of departure is secondary. The “upward path” is symbolic of freedom from bondage, for knowledge dissolves the connection with body and karma. Thus, the upward nāḍī represents the soul’s ascent into its own true nature, not a spatial travel.

The mantra teaches: Many nāḍīs flow outward, leading to various destinies (rebirth). Only one upward channel symbolizes the path of liberation.

यह मन्त्र ब्रह्मज्ञान के भ्रम को भेदने वाला है। गुरु या देवता, साधक से कहता है कि ��दि आप सोचते हो कि आपने ब्रह्म को भली-भाँति जान लिया तो निश्चय ही आपने उसे थोड़ा सा भी नहीं जाना, क्योंकि जो कुछ मन और वाणी के भीतर आता है, वह सीमित है और सीमित का ज्ञान अनन्त ब्रह्म का ज्ञान नहीं हो सकता। यही कारण है कि गुरुदेव “उपनिषद-ऋषि” हँसी में कहते हैं कि आपने ब्रह्म के किसी गुण, ब्रह्म के किसी देवता-अंश, या उपास्य रूप को जाना होगा पर परम ब्रह्म अभी अन्वेषण की राह पर है।

भगवत्पाद आदि शंकराच���र्य कहते हैं कि “ब्रह्म सत्य, ज्ञान, अनन्त, निर्गुण आत्मा है।” इसे वस्तु की तरह जानना असम्भव है। जो ब्रह्म को पूर्ण रूप से ज्ञेय मान ले; वह ब्रह्म की अनन्तता को नष्ट कर देता है। अतः ब्रह्म का ज्ञान कभी “पूर्ण” नहीं, बल्कि सतत् अनुभूति का विस्तार है। आदि शंकराचार्य स्पष्ट करते हैं कि “ज्ञान में ‘मैं जानता हूँ’ का अहंकार बना रहे तो सच्चा ज्ञान अभी आरम्भ हुआ नहीं।” ज्ञाता के अहंकार का विसर्जन ह��। ब्रह्मज्ञान का सबसे बड़ा अवरोध है - “मैं जान गया हूँ!”
यह वाक्य ही अविद्या की अन्तिम ज्वाला है। जब तक ज्ञाता, ज्ञान और ज्ञेय में भेद है — ब्रह्म परोक्ष है। सच्चा ज्ञान तब; जब ज्ञाता स्वयं ही चैतन्य के रूप में विलीन हो जाए।

यह मन्त्र साधक से कहता है कि आपने जितना जाना है; वह केवल द्वार तक है।आगे अपरोक्षानुभूति; आत्म-प्रकाश का क्षेत्र है। जो यह सोचकर ठहर जाए कि सब जान लिया; वह अज्ञान में खड़ा है। जो कहे “अब भी जानना शेष है” वही वास्तव में ज्ञानमार्ग पर है।

निष्कर्ष यह है कि अनन्त ब्रह्म की यात्रा।
ब्रह्म को समाप्त सत्य की तरह नहीं, बल्कि असीम अनुभूति की तरह अपनाना है।
इसलिए मन्त्र का सार - “आप जितना जानते हो वह अभी बहुत कम है। ज्ञान की राह अभी खुली है; आगे बढ़ो। अद्वैत का अन्तिम संदेश है कि ब्रह्म को जानना अहंकार का विस्मरण है। ब्रह्म को पाना आत्मा में अविर्भूती है। ब्रह्मनिष्ठ होना पूर्ण मौन की अनुभूति है।

“If you think, ‘I know Brahman well,’ then you know only a little — just a small aspect among the gods or in yourself. Therefore, I believe the Truth still remains to be examined.”

This mantra is a bold correction to the ego of the seeker. It declares that the very thought of having “fully understood” Brahman is a misunderstanding.
Why? Because everything we “know” as knowledge: arises in the mind, is bounded by concepts, and belongs to the realm of experience. But Brahman is limitless, not an object of thought, and not something the mind can grasp or conclude.

Thus the Upaniṣad cautions: If you claim complete knowledge of Brahman, the knower’s ego still remains- therefore true knowledge has not yet dawned.
You have known only a trace some attribute, some representation not the Infinite Reality.

Adi Śhaṅkarācārya emphasizes: True knowledge of Brahman dissolves the knower. Where “I know” remains, duality still persists. The Infinite can never be confined within the mind’s finite categories. Thus the proclamation. Brahman cannot be declared as known only as realized by being. When the seeker experiences: No knower, nothing known only pure Consciousness remains, then alone Brahma-jñāna is born.

Spiritual Significance of the Verse. This mantra humbles the intellect and lifts the seeker beyond concepts: Knowledge is not possession it is dissolution. Brahman is not achieved It is unveiled. Brahman is not objectified It is our own Self. Therefore the teaching invites deeper inquiry: “Do not stop.
Continue to examine the Realization is still ahead.” The moment you believe you fully know Brahman, that very belief proves you do not. Where ego ends - Brahman shines.

यह मंत्र उपनिषद् के समस्त उपदेश का अन्तिम सार है। यह कहता है कि जब हृदय के सभी ग्रन्थि अज्ञान, अहंकार, आसक्ति और कामना पूरी तरह टूट जाते हैं, तब मनुष्य मरणधर्मा नहीं रहता; वह अमृतस्वरूप हो जाता है। यही उपनिषद् का अन्तिम अनुशासन, सर्वोच्च शिक्षा है।

आदि शंकराचार्य ���हृदय-ग्रन्थि” को तीन रूपों में बताते है ! अविद्या - आत्मा को न पहचानना, कामना-इच्छाओं से बन्धन और कर्म - इन कामनाओं से उत्पन्न चक्र जब ज्ञान का उदय होता है, अविद्या से कामना, कामना से कर्म का यह त्रिकोणीय बन्धन एक साथ नष्ट होता है।

भगवद्पाद आदि शंकराचार्य कहते हैं कि हृदयग्रन्थियों के नष्ट होते ही जीव, ब्रह्मस्वरूप में स्थित होकर ‘अमृत’ हो जाता है। यह मुक्ति शरीर छोड़ने के बाद नहीं, बल्कि “इह”- यहीं, इसी जीवन में होती है।

श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता कहती है कि “अज्ञान का मूल छिन्न हो जाए, तभी परम पद की प्राप्ति होती है।”

“निरस्त-सर्वकामो योगी ही शान्त��� और ब्रह्मनिर्वाण को प्राप्त होता है।” यह उपनिषद् के “हृदय-ग्रन्थि-भेद” का ही प्रतिपादन है। ब्रह्मसूत्र कहते हैं कि “अविद्या-निवृत्तिः” ही मुक्ति का कारण है। जब अज्ञान टूटता है, तो जीव और ब्रह्म का भेद समाप्त होता है। यह अवस्था कोई परिवर्तन नहीं, बल्कि स्वयं-स्वरूप की पहचान है। इसलिए ग्रन्थि-भेद अर्थात् ज्ञान का पूर्ण प्रादुर्भाव। यह मंत्र उपनिषद् का अन्तिम, निर्णायक निष्कर्ष है - हृदय की सभी ग्रन्थियाँ (अज्ञान, अहंकार, आसक्ति) टूटें। मर्त्य जीव ‘अमृतस्वरूप’ आत्मा को प्राप्त करे और यहीं, इसी जीवन में ब्रह्म का साक्षात्कार हो, इसी को उपनिषद् “अनुशासन का चरम बिन्दु” कहता है।

This mantra gives the final and supreme teaching of the Upanishad: When all the knots of the heart are broken, the mortal becomes immortal.
This alone is the complete instruction.

Adi Shankaracharya explains that the “knots of the heart” (hṛdaya-granthi) are: Avidyā- ignorance of the Self Kāma desires arising from ignorance; Karma compulsive action born of desire These three form the chain of bondage.

When Self-knowledge arises, all you three knots collapse simultaneously ignorance ends, desires vanish, and karmic bondage dissolves. In that very moment: The seeker transcends martyatva (mortality), And abides in his true nature the immortal Self. Adi Shankaracharya stresses that this realization happens “iha” here itself, in this very life.

Bhagavad Gita parallels this truth; “Cut the root of ignorance and attain the supreme state.”
“He who is free from all desires attains peace and Brahman.”
This is the same breaking of the inner knots that the Upanishad speaks of.

The Brahma-sutras affirm: Liberation arises from the destruction of ignorance. When knowledge dawns, the false individuality collapses, revealing the jīva’s identity with Brahman. Thus “hṛdaya-granthi-bheda” is the direct mark of Self-realization.

This mantra encapsulates the Upanishad’s ultimate message: When ignorance, desire, and karmic bondage dissolve, The mortal recognizes his eternal, immortal essence, And here itself realizes Brahman. This alone is the final teaching of the Upanishad.

यह मंत्र उपनिषद् के मुक्ति-सूत्रों में अत्यन्त महत्त्वपूर्ण है। यह स्पष्ट करता है कि हृदय में संचित सभी कामनाओं का लय ही अमृतत्व मुक्ति का वास्तविक द्वार है। कामना ही मन की चंचलता और जीव-बन्धन का मूल है; कामनाओं के निवृत्त होने ��र मन निर्मल और निर्विकल्प हो जाता है, और तब साधक ब्रह्म-तत्त्व का प्रत्यक्ष अनुभव करता है।

भगवद्पादाचार्य कहते हैं कि "कामाः हृदि श्रिताः”- कामनाएँ बाहरी नहीं, भीतर हृदय-गुहा में वास करती हैं।
“प्रमुच्यन्ते” - सिर्फ दबाना नहीं, बल्कि पूर्णत: लय हो जाना; मन को अब उनका आग्रह न रह जाना। कामना का लय होने पर मन उपाधि नहीं रहता; वह ब्रह्मानुभूति का उपयुक्त पात्र बन जाता है।

आदि शंकराचार्य लिखते हैं - जब सब कामनाएँ समाप्त हो जाती हैं, तब जीव मर्त्यभाव (सीमित देह-बुद्धि) का अतिक्रमण कर अमृतभाव में प्रतिष्ठित हो जाता है। इसी अवस्था को वे “अत्रैव ब्रह्म समश्नुते” यहीं, इसी जीवन में, ब्रह्म का अनुभव—कहते हैं।

गीता के अनेक श्लोक इसी सत्य की पुष्टि करते हैं - "कामानां त्यागः" शान्तिरूपा अवस्था है। “यदा संहरते चायं कूर्मोऽङ्गानीव सर्वशः” - इन्द्रिय और मन की प्रवृत्तियों को समेटना ही "योग" है। श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता कहती है, जो मनुष्य इच्छाओं के उद्रेक को जीत लेता है, वही शान्ति और ब्रह्मानुभूति का अधिकारी होता है।

ब्रह्मसूत्रों में कहा गया है - “अविरोधेन ध्यानम्” मन तभी स्���िर होता है, जब उसकी आसक्ति समाप्त हो। ब्रह्म इन्द्रियगोचर नहीं; इसलिए कामनाओं के साथ जुड़ा हुआ चंचल मन उसे नहीं जान सकता। कामना-शून्यता निदिध्यासन (गहन ध्यान) की अनिवार्य शर्त है। सूत्रकार स्पष्ट करते हैं कि कामनाओं का अभाव ही ब्रह्मज्ञान का कारण नहीं, बल्कि उसकी अनिवार्य भूमिका है। जब हृदय की सभी इच्छाएँ समाप्त हो जाती हैं, तब मर्त्य मानव अमृतस्वरूप आत्मा को प्राप्त करता है। इसी शरीर में, इसी जीवन में, वह ब्रह्म-तत्त्व का अनुभव कर लेता है। उपनिषद्, आदि शंकराचार्य, गीता और ब्रह्मसूत्र सभी यही सत्य कहते हैं कि कामना-शून्य हृदय ही ब्रह्म का आसन है; और कामनाओं का लय ही अमृतत्व का मार्ग।

This profound mantra declares the essential condition for liberation: when all desires lodged in the heart fall away completely, the mortal becomes immortal, and here itself in this very life he attains the realization of Brahman.

Ādi Shankaracharya explains:
The kāmāḥ (desires) referred to here are subtle inner cravings residing in the heart, not merely outward impulses. Pramucyante means not suppression but total dissolutionthe mind no longer clings to anything. When desires dissolve: The mind becomes pure, steady, and free of agitation. The jīva transcends the sense of mortality (martyatva) and abides in the natural state of the Self—amṛtatva, immortality.
Shankaracharya emphasizes that this realization is not post-mortem, but occurs “atra” here and now, as Brahman is experienced directly when the heart is free of desire.

The mantra’s message is clear and powerful: When every desire in the heart dissolves, The mortal transcends mortality, And here itself attains Brahman. Upanishad, Shankaracharya , Gita and the Brahma-sutras all proclaim: A desire-free heart becomes the seat of Brahman; desirelessness is the doorway to immortality.

यह मंत्र आत्मज्ञान की एक अत्यन्त सूक्ष्म एवं निर्णायक प्रक्रिया को बताता है। आत्मा का प्रथम बोध “अस्ति” (वह है) रूप में होता है और इस अस्तित्व-बोध के स्थिर होने पर उसका तत्त्वभाव, अर्थात् स्वरूप-ज्ञान, प्रकट होता है।

भगवद्पादाचार्य कहते हैं कि प्रारम्भिक साधक इन्द्रिय और मन की सीमाओं से परे जा कर केवल इतना पहचानता है कि एक सत्य सत्ता है - “अस्ति”। यह अस्ति-बोध, श्रुति-उपदेश और गुरु-निर्देश से उत्पन्न होता है, न कि इन्द्रिय-जिज्ञासा से। जब यह ��अस्ति’ आत्मा के निरन्तर, नित्य अस्तित्व का अनुभव साधक के हृदय में दृढ़ होता है, तब उसी की शान्ति में आत्मा का तत्त्वभाव, अर्थात् उसका निरूपाधिक, अखण्ड स्वरूप, प्रकट हो जाता है ! भगवान शंकराचार्य स्पष्ट करते हैं कि “अस्ति’ बोध साधन है, ‘तत्त्वभाव’ सिद्धि है।

श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता कहती है कि "नासतो विद्यते भावो नाभावो विद्यते सतः।" अर्थात् जो सत्ता है, वही सत्य है; असत् का कोई अस्तित्व नहीं। इसी ��सत्’ का प्रारम्भिक बोध ही इस मंत्र का “अस्ति” है। जब ध्यान-योग में चित्त शान्त होता है, तब साधक “स्वरूपेऽवस्थितः” अर्थात् अपने तत्त्वभाव में प्रतिष्ठित हो जाता है।

ब्रह्मसूत्र कहता है - “जन्माद्यस्य यतः” जो सदा विद्यमान है, वही ब्रह्म है। यह निरन्तर “अस्ति” सत्ता-बोध ब्रह्म का ही लक्षण है। एक अन्य सूत्र “अदृश्यत्वात्” में यह स्पष्ट किया गया कि ब्रह्म इन्द्रिय-अगोचर है। अतः प्रारम्भ मे��� वह केवल सत्ता-सत्ता रूप में अनुभूत होता है, जो आगे गहन मनन-निदिध्यासन में तत्त्वज्ञान में परिणत होता है।

मंत्र का सार यह है कि साधक पहले आत्मा को “अस्ति” वह है, रूप में जानता है। इस ‘अस्ति’ का बोध बढ़ते-बढ़ते तत्त्वभाव, अर्थात् उसके शुद्ध, अद्वैत, नि��्गुण स्वरूप की प्रत्यक्ष अनुभूति में बदल जाता है। यही आत्मसाक्षात्कार है; जहाँ सत्य सत्ता और स्वरूप ज्ञान दोनों एक हो जाते हैं। यह मंत्र आत्मज्ञान की क्रमबद्ध यात्रा को प्रकट करता है - "अस्ति” से “तत्त्व” तक, बोध से अनुभूति तक, श्रुति से सिद्धि तक।

This mantra reveals the subtle progression of Self-knowledge.
First, the seeker intuitively recognizes “It exists” (asti)—the sheer presence of the Self beyond senses and mind. As this existential certainty deepens, it matures into tattvabhāva, the realization of the Self’s true nature as pure, non-dual Consciousness.

Adi Shankaracharya explains:
In the beginning, the seeker cannot grasp the Self through senses or concepts. Yet through śruti (scripture) and the guidance of the Guru, he gains a firm conviction - “A Reality exists beyond body, mind, and intellect.” This initial existence-awareness is the doorway. When this “asti” the felt presence of the Self becomes steady and unobstructed, the mind becomes calm, subtle, and pure. Then the deeper truth dawns: the Self is not only "existent" but is one’s own infinite, attribute-less nature—tattvabhāva. Shankaracharya writes: Existence-knowledge leads to essence-knowledge.

The Gita states: “The Real always is; the unreal never is.” This “is-ness” (sattā) mirrors the mantra’s ‘asti’—the first glimpse of Truth. Later, in deep meditation the Gira describes tattvabhāva: the state where the seeker is established in his true Self, beyond thought and duality.

The Brahma-sutras affirm:
Brahman is recognized first as the self-existent Reality (the “asti” recognition). Through contemplation, this expands into understanding Brahman’s true nature infinite, changeless, non-dual Consciousness. Thus, what begins as existential faith culminates in direct realization.

This mantra teaches two stages of awakening: Astibodha “It exists”. The seeker perceives the undeniable presence of the Self. Tattvabhāva - This is my real nature”. The seeker realizes the essence of that Presence as the pure, infinite Self. When the “is-ness” becomes clear, the truth of the Self shines fully.

"केनोपनिषद - प्रथम खण्ड:"

श्वास-प्रश्वास का आवागमन हमें जीवन का प्रत्यक्ष प्रमाण प्रतीत होता है। मानव के लिए प्राण ही जीवन है ! प्राण रुक जाए तो जीवन समाप्त। पर, उपनिषद् पूछता है कि प्राण को चलाने वाली शक्ति कौन है? प्राण स्वयं में जड़ है; उसकी गति और चेतना का आधार किसी और गहन सत्ता में निहित है। यही सत्ता इस मन्त्र में ब्रह्म कही गई है कि जिस प्राण से प्राण नहीं चलता, बल्कि जिस चेतन-तत्त्व से प्राण संचालित होता है वही ब्रह्म है।

आदि शंकराचार्य स्पष्ट कहते हैं - प्राण पंचवायु का समूह है। जड़, परिवर्तनशील और अनात्म। प्राण-क्रिया के पीछे जो स्वयंसिद्ध चेतना है, वही आत्मस्वरूप ब्रह्म है। प्राण शरीर और इन्द्रियों को चलाता है, पर ब्रह्म ही प्राण को चेतना की प्रेरणा देता है। अतः: प्राण उपकरण हैं; ब्रह्म उनकी प्रेरक चेतना है। आदि शंकराचार्य कहते हैं कि ब्रह्म प्राण से परे और प्राण का भी साक्षी है।
“नेदं यदिदमुपासते” - सच्चे उपास्य का बोध; जो श्वास, बल या प्राणशक्ति को ईश्वर मानकर पुका��ते हैं; वह अभी भी प्रकृति के क्षेत्र में हैं। प्राण की उपासना साधना है, पर लक्ष्य प्राण के स्वामी चैतन्य आत्मा का अनुभव है। प्राण का भी साक्षी चेतन आत्मा है, जब साधक यह पहचान लेता है कि मैं वह चेतना हूँ, जो प्राण-क्रिया को प्रकाशित करती है” तब मृत्यु और जीवन दोनों साक्षी की दृष्टि में खेल बन जाते हैं। तब उपनिषद् कहता है कि “तदेव ब्रह्म त्वं विद्धि “वही ब्रह्म है - वही तुम हो!”
ब्रह्म श्वास नहीं; ��्वास का आधार है। ब्रह्म जीवन नहीं; जीवन की चेतना है। वह परम सत्य — तुम ही हो!

That which does not breathe by the breath, but by whose power breath itself is moved Know That alone to be Brahman, not this which people worship as an object.

Breath is often regarded as the unmistakable sign of life.
When breath begins, we say life has begun; when breath stops, life seems to end. Yet the Upaniṣad calls us to look deeper: What animates the breath itself? What is the Life of life? The prāṇa the vital force — is not self-sustaining. It operates like a perfectly designed instrument, but dependent on a subtler, unseen Principle. That hidden Principle, the one that drives the breath, but itself requires no breath is here declared to be Brahman.

Adi Śhaṅkarācārya clarifies that: Prāṇa (the vital winds) is inert (jaḍa) by itself. Its motion comes from pure Consciousness. The Self does not breathe It empowers breathing.

Thus Brahman is: The Source of vitality.The Witness of every movement.The unmoving Ground of all change. What is animated cannot be the Absolute. The animator alone is eternal.

Acrucial spiritual discernment:

Breath, power, energy though sacred belong to the realm of nature,the realm of the changing. To stop at prāṇa is to adore the servant, not the Master. Upaniṣadic wisdom moves the seeker beyond life-forceto the Light that reveals life-force.

The Essence of Realization
When a seeker recognizes: “I am not the breath, but the Consciousness by which breathing is known,” then fear of death evaporates. Life and death become mere conditions within the unconditioned Self.

यह मंत्र उपनिषद् के परम सिद्धान्त को स्पष्ट करता है कि परमात्मा वाणी, मन और इन्द्रियों से प्राप्त नहीं हो सकता। जो वस्तु मन और इन्द्रियों का विषय हो, वह सीमित और परिवर्तनशील होती है; जबकि आत्मा अनन्त, अविकार और अप्रमेय है। इसलिए वह किसी भी बाह्य साधन से ज्ञेय नहीं, केवल अंतःकरण की निर्मलता से आत्मप्रकाशित होता है।

भगवद्पादाचार��य आदि शंकराचार्य कहते हैं कि “न वाचा” - वाणी में द्वैत है; शब्द केवल वस्तु का संकेत हैं, स्वयं वस्तु नहीं। ”न मनसा” - मन संकल्प-विकल्प का क्षेत्र है, जबकि आत्मा निरविकल्प है। “न चक्षुषा” - नेत्र केवल रूप देखते हैं, पर आत्मा अरूप है।
आदि शंकराचार्य इस पर महत्त्वपूर्ण टिप्पणी करते हैं - जो आत्मा ‘अस्ति’ है, वही अपने अस्तित्व से जाना जाता है, इन्द्रियों से नहीं। अर्थात् आत्मा किसी बाहरी प्रमाण से नहीं, बल्कि स्वयं चैतन्य-स्वरूप से प्रमाणित है। इसीलिए उपनिषद् कहता है कि “अस्तीति ब्रुवतः अन्यत्र” - जो जान��ार कहते हैं - “वह है” उसी के वचनों, उपदेश और अनुभव के आधार पर साधक आत्मा की खोज में प्रवृत्त होता है।

शास्त्र कहते हैं कि “अव्यक्तोऽयम्, अचिन्त्योऽयम्, अविकार्योऽयम्।” - आत्मा अव्यक्त है - इन्द्रियों से परे; अचिन्त्य है - मन की कल्पना से परे; और अविकार है—किसी परिवर्तन का विषय नहीं।

श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता कहती है कि “न सूर्यः न शशाङ्कः न पावकः तद्भासयन्ति” अर्थात् आत्मा स्वयंज्योति है, उसे कोई बाहरी प्रकाश प्रकट नहीं कर सकता।

ब्रह्मसूत्र के अनुसार “शास्त्रयोक्त्युपदेशात्” - ब्रह्म का ज्ञान इन्द्रियों या तर्क से नहीं, बल्कि श्रुति-उपदेश, मनन और ध्यान से होता है। सूत्र यह भी घोषित करते हैं कि
“अदृश्यत्वात्” - ब्रह्म इन्द्रिय-अगोचर है।
“अनिर्वचनीयत्वात्” - वर्णन से परे है। इसलिए उसका बोध उसी को होता है, जिसका मन निर्मल होकर अहं-बोध से पार जाता है।

यह मंत्र सिखाता है कि आत्मा न वा���ी से जाना जा सकता है, न मन से, न इन्द्रियों से। वह केवल स्वानुभूति, श्रुति-उपदेश, और अन्तर्मुख ध्यान से ही प्रकट होता है।जो यह समझ लेते हैं कि आत्मा इन्द्रिय-प्रमेय नहीं, बल्कि स्वयंसिद्ध सत्य है, वे ही आत्मज्ञान की दिशा में आगे बढ़ते हैं। यही उपनिषद्, ��ीता और आदि शंकराचार्य जी की सम्मिलित घोषणा है कि आत्मा स्वयं प्रकाश है; उसे जानने वाला ही वास्तविक ज्ञानी है।

The mantra declares that the Supreme Self cannot be reached by speech, mind, or eyes.
It lies beyond all sensory and mental grasp.

Adi Shankaracharya explains: Speech can describe only limited objects. Mind works through thoughts and duality. Eyes see only form. But the Self is formless, thought-free, and beyond all description. Thus the Upanishad says: Only by accepting the teaching of the wise who affirm “It is” and by inner purification does one realize the Self.

The Gita and Brahma-sutras echo the same truth: Brahman is not an object of senses; it is self-revealing and known only through deep inner realization.

मनुष्य श्रवण को ज्ञान का प्रमुख द्वार मानता है। जो कानों से सुनाई दे - वही सत्य ! पर, उपनिषद् फिर पूछता है - श्रोता कौन है? कान सुनते हैं या सुनने वाला कोई और है? कान केवल ध्वनि के उपकरण हैं। ध्वनि के प्रति जागृति तभी होती है; जब भीतर चैतन्य क�� प्रकाश सक्रिय होता है। उसी अदृश्य सुनने वाले को यह मन्त्र ब्रह्म घोषित करता है।

आदि शंकराचार्य कहते हैं - कान और ध्वनि दोनों जड़ हैं। श्रवण की सामर्थ्य ब्रह्म-चैतन्य से है। जो श्रोत्र का भी श्रोता है; वह नित्य, निराकार, अविकार ब्रह्म है। श्रोत्रगोचर (सुनाई देने वाली) वस्तु नश्वर है; अतः ब्रह्म नहीं।

ब्रह्म है - श्रवण के पीछे की साक्षी-शक्ति; प्रत्येक ध्वनि का निरुपाधिक प्रकाशक, वह जो बिना इ���्द्रियों के सब जानता है

आदि शंकराचार्य मुख्य अर्थ बताते हैं - ब्रह्म न श्रवणयोग्य है, परन्तु श्रवण-शक्ति का आधार स्वयं ब्रह्म है। “नेदं यदिदमुपासते” एक गहन चेतावनी - उपासना मार्ग है, पर लक्ष्य उपासक का स्वयं का आत्मस्वरूप है।

जब साधक ध्वनि-जल में उठती तरंगों से परे जाकर उस निश्शब्द चैतन्य को प��चान लेता है, जो श्रवण को सम्भव कर रहा है; तब वह अनुभव करता है - मैं ही वह चेतना हूँ, जिसकी प्रेरणा से कान सुनते हैं।”
उपनिषद् का शाश्वत सन्देश - ब्रह्म ध्वनि नहीं; श्रवण का कारण है। वही ब्रह्म है और वही तुम हो।

“That which the ear does not hear, but by whose power the ear hears; Know That alone to be Brahman, not this which people worship as an object.”

Hearing appears simple — sound strikes the ear, and we say, “I heard.” Yet the Upaniṣad asks a profound question: Who is the true Hearer within? The physical ear is but an instrument; inert, dependent, limited. It can receive vibrations, but the awareness of sound arises only when Consciousness illumines the experience. Thus Brahman is not any heard sound, nor even the organ of hearing. Brahman is the inner Listener, the very Light of cognition.

True realization begins when one recognizes a dimension of perception unrelated to ear or sound: A silent Awareness unshaken by noise or quietude always present, always self-luminous. When the seeker discovers: “I am the Consciousness by which hearing is known,” then the limitations of sensory existence dissolve. Brahman is not what the ear hears; but the power by which the ear hears.

यह मंत्र योग की वास्तविक परिभाषा को आध्यात्मिक गहराई में प्रस्तुत करता है। उपनिषद् कहता है कि जब इन्द्रियाँ पूर्णतः स्थिर हो जाएँ, अनियंत्रित विषय-भ्रमण से रुककर—तो वह अवस्था "योग" कहलाती है। इन्द्रिय-निग्रह, मन की दृढ़ता और बुद्धि की एकाग्रता इस योग का मूल स्वरूप हैं।

भगवद्पादाचार्य आदि शंकराचार्य के अनुसार "स्थिरा इन्द्रियधारणा" अर्थात् इन्द्रियों का विषयों स��� हटकर आत्म-चिन्तन में स्थिर होना। यह मात्र दमन नहीं, बल्कि अन्तर्मुखता का परिपक्व रूप है। जब साधक इस अवस्था में प्रवेश करता है, तब उसका मन अप्रमत्त अर्थात् असावधानी, प्रमाद, मोह और विक्षेप से मुक्त हो जाता है। आदि शंकराचार्य कहते हैं कि इस निश्चलता में ही आत्मा का स्वरूप प्रकट होता है। इन्द्रियों का उदय-विलय - "प्रभवाप्ययौ" अर्थात् उनकी गतिविधि और शान्ति, इसी योग की कसौटी है।

श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता गीता कहती है कि
“यतो यतो निश्चरति मनश्चञ्चलमस्थिरम्, ततो नियंत्रयेत्।” मन और इन्द्रियों को पुनः-पुनः आत्मा में स्थापित करना ही योग है। गीता योग को समत्व और अन्तःशुद्धि की अवस्था बताती है, जहाँ साधक
प्रमाद रहित, जागरूक और आत्म-प्रकाश में स्थित होता है।

ब्रह्मसूत्र में यह सिद्ध किया गया है कि मनः-निग्रह आत्मज्ञान की पूर्वपीठिका है। इन्द्रिय-शान्ति के बिना निदिध्यासन (गहन ध्यान) सम्भव नहीं। ब्रह्म “अप्रमेय” है, इसलिए उसका ज्ञान इन्द्रिय-गतिविधि के क्षय में ही उदित होता ह��। इसलिए स्थिरा इन्द्रियधारणा ही परम ज्ञान का द्वार है।

यह मंत्र सिखाता है कि इन्द्रियों का स्थिर होना ही योग है। इस स्थिरता में साधक अप्रमत्त, सजग और आत्मा में स्थित हो जाता है। योग का सार “प्रभव-अप्यय” इन्द्रियों की गति और शान्ति को समान दृष्टि से स्वीकार करना है। अन्ततः यह ��ी वह स्थिति है, जहाँ आत्मज्ञान उदित होता है और मुक्ति का मार्ग खुलता है।

This mantra presents a profound and precise definition of Yoga. The Upanishad declares that true Yoga is the steady restraint and stillness of the senses a state where they no longer wander outward but remain firmly grounded in inner awareness.

Adi Shankaracharya explains: Sthirā indriya-dhāraṇā means the senses withdraw naturally and remain still, absorbed in the Self. This is not suppression but mature inwardness, where the mind is free from agitation. In such a state, the seeker becomes apramatta alert, free from negligence, delusion, and distraction.

Shankaracharya notes that this steadiness reveals the true nature of the Self. The phrase “yogo hi prabhavāpyayau” means: Yoga is recognized by the arising and subsiding of sense-activity, eventually culminating in perfect stillness.

The GIta echoes the same teaching: “Wherever the restless mind wanders, draw it back and place it in the Self.”

Yoga is inner stability, precision of awareness, and freedom from carelessness. The Goya calls this the state of deep peace and pure Self-realization.

The Brahma-Sutras affirm:
Control of mind and senses is the foundation of meditation, Brahman is not grasped by senses. Thus, only when the senses become quiet can the Self shine forth. This stillness is the necessary ground for nididhyāsana, the contemplative absorption that leads to knowledge.

True Yoga is: the firm stillness of the senses, the alert and undistracted state of mind, the inner poise from which the Self becomes evident. This is the Upanishadic declaration :
Yoga is steady sense-restraint leading to Self-realization.

यह मन्त्र उपनिषद् के महान् रहस्य को और अधिक ��्पष्ट करता है। उपनिषद् कहता है कि “जिसे नेत्र नहीं देख पाते, परन्तु जिसके ज्ञान-प्रकाश से नेत्र देखने म��ं समर्थ होते हैं; वही ब्रह्म है; न कि वह दृश्य रूप जिसे तुम उपासना का विषय बनाते हो।” आँख जो देखती है, वह केवल रूप है; परन्तु रूप की पहचान सम्भव कैसे होती है? क्योंकि चैतन्य आत्मा उसमें उजागर है। ब्रह्म न किसी रंग में है, न किसी आकार में। वह नेत्र का द्रष्टा, दृष्टि का मूल प्रकाश-स्वरूप है।

भगवद्पाद आदि शंकराचार्य स्पष्ट करते हैं - नेत्र और दृश्य अनित्य और जड़ हैं। जो इन दोनों को प्रकाशित करता है - वही नित्य, चेतन ब्रह्म है। इसलिए ब्रह्म गोचर (दिखने वाली वस्तु) नहीं, वरन् साक्षी (प्रकाशक) है। दृश्य ब्रह्म नहीं, द्रष्टा ही ब्रह्म है। जो भीतर सदा साक्षी बना रहता है, उसे बाह्य नेत्रों से नहीं जाना जा सकता। जो देखा जा सके, छुआ जा सके, वह परिवर्तनशील है; वह परम नहीं। उपासना साधक को शुद्ध करती है, परन्तु साध्य में विलीन होने के लिए आवश्यक है; द्रष्टा में स्थित होना। बाह्य देव-विग्रह उपासना का प्र���म चरण है; पर ब्रह्म का सच्चा स्वरूप है; अदृश्य, अवर्णनीय, सर्वव्यापक चैतन्य।

जब साधक यह जान लेता है कि मैं वह चेतना हूँ, जिससे सब दृष्टियाँ सम्भव हैं” तभी ब्रह्मज्ञान का उदय होता है। ब्रह्म ��ृश्य नहीं; दृश्य का प्रकाशक है। वही ब्रह्म है; स्वयं तुम हो।

“That which the eye cannot see, but by whose power the eye sees Know That alone to be Brahman, not this which people worship as an object.”

Human beings trust the senses deeply - “Seeing is believing,” we say. Yet the Upaniṣad challenges this implicit faith: Before every act of seeing who is the Seer ? The eyes merely receive form. But the recognition of form arises only because a deeper light of awareness illumines perception. Brahman, therefore, is not what the eyes can see; Brahman is that because of which seeing itself becomes possible. The eye is not the knower; it is a tool of the knower. The true Seer is never seen.

According to Ādi Shankaracharya - The eye and its objects are inert (jaḍa). They are illumined by Chaitanya- pure Consciousness. Hence, Brahman is not the visible but the illuminator of visibility.

Brahman is the eternal Witness (Sākṣin) behind all perception Anything seen is finite and changing — therefore not the Absolute. The visible cannot be the source of vision. The object cannot be the Self.

“Not this that you worship…” A Spiritual Warning; The mantra concludes with a profound caution: Do not mistake the seen for the Seer. Forms, symbols, and gods worshipped externally can prepare the heart and purify the mind yet they remain objects, distinct from the perceiver. Object-worship can uplift, but the Ultimate Truth cannot be objectified.

Thus Brahman is: Not form but the origin of all form Not a deity with attributes, but the power behind divinity; Not the seen but the eternal Seer. When the seeker turns inward and recognizes the constant Witness; unborn, undying, untouched by the senses
then the Upaniṣadic revelation becomes direct experience:
“I am the Light by which the eyes see.”
