The night the CA fires started, we were texting with my brother. He said he was evacuating, but I could see from his location (we share that) that he wasn't gone. My husband said I should go to bed, and I was just glued to my phone, waiting for my brother to leave.

I found out in the morning that he didn't leave until 3 hours later. Not long after that he was able to communicate to me that his whole neighborhood was gone, and he left with less than 10 minutes to spare. If he had stayed 10 minutes longer, he'd be dead. He was just grateful to be alive. He packed the all unreplaceable items, but forgot to pack clothes. He went out today and bought some clothes.

And I was annoyed because why would he cut it so close when he didn't have to? Found out today from my mom, that it was because he was knocking on all his neighbor's doors, making sure they all left, helped one of them pack up, and made sure he was the last to leave his street. He said one guy refused to leave, and he didn't know if he ever did, and he's worried about him.

Like Fred Rogers said: look for the helpers. In disasters, tell your kids to notice how many people are helping.
