This is one of the most vivid examples of what drives a lot of basketball fans crazy these days. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander obviously isn't the only one who does this, but players trying to get fouled instead of trying to score makes for an awful viewing experience. Sure, it's the smarter analytical play. Free throws are very efficient. But 20 years ago (and maybe even more recently than that), players used pump fakes to then take an open shot. Now, the free throws are prioritized by so many stars.
SGA is dead nice. Undeniable. His mid range game, his pace, etc. So the criticism of “he’s only good because of refs” is lazy and obviously untrue, but the criticism of his style of play is consistent enough that dismissing it entirely is just dishonest. There’s a difference between attacking contact while genuinely trying to score and prioritizing creating officiating dilemmas, and even when refs don’t reward it, anyone who’s watching still registers the intent…which is why you actually have to watch the games instead of just reading the box score. A lot of times it just feels like watching somebody tryna play the system instead of play basketball…very video game 2k glitch that basically is “I know how to enter the animation that makes the defender legally lose.” Reality is we don’t watch basketball just to see the outcome, we watch to see how the outcomes are produced. SGA is dead nice but the critiques are not ALL just fluff.

A special thanks to @lelandscreative for putting this all together!
This kind of stuff is getting ridiculous. The NBA has to have a frank conversation on how to ref the Thunder. This is not, in any way, a foul on Johnson.
Attention, @CanadiensMTL fans.

But he left this letter with us to share with you before Game 3: “MONTRÉAL!!!! We want the Bell Centre ROCKIN’ tomorrow night!!!” https://t.co/agy5sknDPz
Kyle Shanahan on NBC, asked about what makes the Seahawks so difficult: "I know you guys want my expert opinion, but I haven't scored a TD on these guys the last two times I've seen them." 💀
