PRESIDENT SAMIA: TANZANIA AND NAMIBIA TO STRENGTHEN COOPERATION IN TRADE, THE BLUE ECONOMY, GAS, AND MINERALS
The President of the United Republic of Tanzania, H.E. Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, said Tanzania and Namibia have agreed to strengthen cooperation in several strategic sectors, including food security, trade and investment, the Blue Economy, natural gas, minerals, and livestock development, to accelerate economic growth and improve the welfare of citizens in both countries.
She made the remarks during a joint press conference at State House in Dar es Salaam following bilateral talks with the President of the Republic of Namibia, H.E. Dr. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah.
President Samia called upon the private sector and business communities in Tanzania and Namibia to take advantage of the opportunities available in both countries in order to expand trade, investment, and economic cooperation.
She emphasized that the strong political relations between the two nations should be translated into tangible economic benefits for their people through increased commercial partnerships and investment initiatives.
On the Blue Economy, President Samia said the two countries had agreed to maximize the opportunities presented by their vast marine resources. She noted that Tanzania and Namibia would enhance cooperation in the management of marine resources, fisheries, fish processing, and other ocean-based economic activities to increase the sector’s contribution to economic development and sustainable growth.
The two leaders also agreed to deepen cooperation in the natural gas and mining sectors through the exchange of expertise, knowledge, technology, and capacity-building initiatives. President Samia said such collaboration would ensure that the two countries make better use of their natural resources, add value to gas and mineral products, and promote economic transformation and prosperity for their citizens. She added that Tanzania and Namibia would also strengthen cooperation in the livestock sector by harnessing their rich livestock resources to boost production, trade, value addition, food security, employment, and incomes.
The leaders discussed improving transport and connectivity, including the possibility of introducing direct flights between Tanzania and Namibia to facilitate travel, trade, tourism, and investment while strengthening regional integration within SADC.
President Samia further revealed that Namibia had requested Kiswahili teachers to support the teaching of the language to public servants and other groups, as part of efforts to promote Kiswahili in Namibia and across the SADC region.
The two leaders also agreed to continue supporting each other on regional and international matters, including endorsing each other’s candidates for positions in regional and international organizations. President Samia concluded by urging government officials from both countries to ensure that all agreements reached are implemented effectively and on time so that they deliver meaningful and lasting benefits to the people of Tanzania and Namibia.
