Too often, teacher prof. development is an explanation of mandates or a "deep dive" into test results--usually tagged onto an already emotionally exhausting day. Please, let's balance this out with PD that lifts us up and reminds us why we love this profession so damn much.
Emmett Till would have been 77 today. He grew up just one town over from my granddad in Mississippi. I think often of how what happened to Emmett could have so easily happened to him. How arbitrary racial violence can be. How a white woman told a lie and then his life was over.
6 strategies for a culturally inclusive classroom:
1. Learn how to pronounce students' names.
2. Set aside time for relationship housekeeping.
3. Have 1:1 talks w/ students.
4. Connect w/ parents.
5. See yourself as students see you.
6. Know your content.
