🚨BREAKING: Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf has been appointed as Tehran's special envoy to China, according to Xinhua News Agency citing Tasnim.
Qalibaf’s lifelong ties to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and Iran's senior leadership make him one of the regime’s core power brokers. A veteran of the Iran-Iraq War, he commanded the 5th Nasr Division at only twenty-two and built lasting relationships with figures such as Qasem Soleimani and Esmail Qaani. His influence later expanded through senior roles at Khatam al-Anbiya, the IRGC’s engineering and economic conglomerate, before direct appointments by the Supreme Leader to lead the IRGC Air Force and the national police. As Speaker of Parliament and a trusted insider of the Supreme Leader’s office, Qalibaf now functions as a technocratic bridge between Iran’s military-security establishment and its political administration.
His appointment to oversee the China portfolio is significant given the ongoing the war against the US, Israel, and the Arab Gulf. By placing Qalibaf, who also served as a chief negotiator with the US, in charge of this file, Tehran consolidates its most important external lifelines under a single senior executor. He is well positioned to secure Chinese financing through accelerated sanctions-evasion oil sales, coordinate dual-use and defense-technology procurement via IRGC-linked logistics networks, and manage diplomatic relations with Beijing at the UN Security Council and other international forums.
If he is assigned to Beijing, he will join ambassador Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli, a former Minister of Interior and National Domestic Security Council (NDSC) member with close ties to the IRGC and Basij commanders.
