📝✨ Highly Cited! Congratulations to UCD’s Professor Eliana B. Souto and Dr Madhusanka Liyanage on being named among the world’s most influential in their areas of research.
The pair have been recognised in the latest Highly Cited Researchers report, compiled by Clarivate Analytics, which lists the top 1% of the world's most cited academics.
Professor Eliana B. Souto, who works on new drug and gene delivery systems, and computer scientist Dr Madhusanka Liyanage are among 27 researchers from Irish universities and research institutions included in this year’s global list.
To be named as a ‘Highly Cited Researcher’, it must be demonstrated that an individual’s work has had a broad and significant influence in their field.
A Full Professor of Pharmaceutical Engineering at the UCD School of Chemical and Bioprocess Engineering, Professor Souto’s research centres on designing, developing and characterising new drug-delivery systems.
Having coordinated numerous international projects, she has supervised over 50 researchers (post-docs, PhDs and Master's), filed over a dozen patents, and has acted as Chief Editor, Associate Editor and Member of the Editorial Board of several international scientific journals, and as a consultant in pharmaceutical technology and nanotechnology in the field of intellectual property.
This is the fourth year that Professor Souto has received the ‘highly cited researcher’ distinction.
Dr Liyanage is an Ad Astra Fellow and Director of Graduate Research at the UCD School of Computer Science. He leads UCD’s NetsLab research group, which focuses on the security and privacy of future mobile networks. He has co-authored over 300 publications, including books and patents, and secured more than €12 million in funding as PI of several EU H2020/Horizon Europe projects.
In 2024 and 2025, he was named among the Top 1,000 Young Researchers Shaping the Future of Science by https://t.co/OQERfMfGph.
Overall, there were 7,131 Highly Cited Researcher awards for 2025, which, according to Clarivate Analytics, given the global number of scientists, makes those listed researchers 1 in 1,000.
