BREAKING: Gavin Newson has just proposed the 28th Amendment to the United States Constitution.

The 28th Amendment will take 4 gun safety measures and enshrine them in our Constitution. They are as follows:

1) It will raise the minimum age to purchase any gun to 21 years of age

2) It will require that there is a reasonable waiting period for gun purchases

3) It will require Universal background checks

4) It will ban the civilian purchase of assault weapons

Here are my thoughts:

I personally would change #4 to not ban all purchases, but make it much more difficult for the average American to purchase such a weapon. Make them jump through hoops.

I would also add a stipulation that all Guns should be insured.

Former President Obama just summed up the Gun debate in under a minute:

"I think somehow — and there are a lot of historical reasons for this — gun ownership in this country became an ideological issue, and a partisan issue, in ways that it shouldn't be. It has become sort of a proxy for arguments about our culture wars, you know? Urban versus rural. Race is always an element in these issues. Issues of class and education, and so forth.

Instead of just taking a very practical approach, like we do, let's say, for example, with car safety, where we say, 'All right, we got a bunch of accidents. Let's have seat belts. And let's make cars safer. And let's engineer our roads so that we prevent them. Instead of thinking about it in a very pragmatic way, we end up really arguing about identity, and emotion, and all kinds of stuff that does not have to do with keeping our children safe."

I'd love to hear both sides of the political spectrum weigh in on this clip.

As someone who leans to the left, I'll tell you why the apparent Tucker Carlson decision to come to Twitter and create a new show here has me at least a little bit hopeful. Please hear me out before criticism:

- The biggest gripe I had with Tucker's show was that he pushed theories over fact, and implied things which were not always true, bordering on lies sometimes.

- If Twitter is able to integrate a live version of Community Notes for his broadcasts, his embellishments, theories and implied narratives can be fact-checked by the community in real time. Additionally, the real time tweet stream would also act as pushback to any inaccurate information.

- The alternative to a Tucker/Twitter team-up would have been the possibility of him going to a far-right media organization like a Newsmax or OAN, and possibly taking a conspiracy-laden, far-right agenda into the mainstream.

My hope, and I very well could be wrong, is that Twitter makes Tucker more moderate and the community here, both right and left use whatever new tools Twitter could offer to call him out when he drifts too far into far-fetched conspiracy theory territory.

I'm an optimist and I hope that I'm right. The alternative would likely be quite bad for Carlson, Twitter and America.
