I was born there. Went back 2-1/2 years ago to visit family living nearby, but not in Portland proper. The grandkids had a soccer game downtown. We went to watch. Empty businesses, buildings, stores. No traffic or buses, and no tourists. Our family members acted like this was completely normal! Broken down RVs parked in town and on the streets. Vehicles covered with blue tarps parked at expired parking meters. Tents anywhere there was a grassy patch between a street and sidewalk. Pop-up cannabis dispensaries and Mexican pottery stores have taken over. Street signs like STOP or YIELD- all spray painted with profanity. But… still, young kids’ soccer games are still being scheduled and played downtown. The parents are blind to the truth. Portland used to be the city of roses. No longer true. The locals need to stop accepting Portland’s disastrous condition as its new normal.
