This is my sweet daughter, Francesca, one month before she died of brain cancer.She never got the chance to build the life and legacy she deserved, so we are building one in her name.

Over the past six years, Team Beans has raised $3.7 million for infant brain tumor research. This year, we’ve raised $77,000 toward our $100,000 goal for Dana-Farber, and we are just $23,000 away.

I cannot overstate how important this funding is to Francesca’s doctors and researchers. It has already made a real difference: a clinical trial and registry for her type of cancer were created entirely because of the people who supported Team Beans.

Francesca was so full of life, even when she was sick. After watching this terrible disease take my child, helping find a cure became the cause of my life.

I ran two Boston Marathons to raise money, and I would run one every day if it meant helping cure this disease. Now, I ride the Pan-Mass Challenge every year for Francesca and for every baby still fighting.

That would be a convenient narrative for you I suppose, but:

Not only have I voted for every Democrat in every election I have been eligible to vote in, including for candidates I disliked.

Not only did I take a ton of shit for calling out people on the left who were sitting out 2024.

But I also raised almost $120K for Dem House candidates in 2024.

Never once have I thrown a temper tantrum about threatening to leave the party over how it’s changed over time because it’s about a broader purpose, not my own personal delicate feelings.

And there are many more just like me. We just want to see the party meet the moment on holding Israel to account for committing war crimes.

You, on the other hand, want to make it all about you.

So leave the party if you must. The rest of us grownups will continue to keep our eyes on the prize.

When I heard about Senator Graham’s death last night, the first thing I thought about was not all the things he said and did in service of Donald Trump. I thought of the time before Donald Trump when he was a brother to Senator John McCain.

A time when senators from different parties could fight about politics and still be friends. A time when a conservative Republican from South Carolina could say of my father: “If you can’t admire Joe Biden as a person, you’ve got a problem. He’s the nicest person I’ve ever met in politics. As good a man as God ever created.”

That is the Senator Graham I will remember today. Not because I have forgotten what came after. Because in that memory there is hope. Hope for a country where brothers can fight like hell over policy and still share a meal, and a laugh, and the loss of the people they love.
