When the Canadian Dream Becomes a Nightmare

This post is meant to raise awareness about a growing reality many people are facing as a result of recent immigration developments in Canada

About two months ago, a young man was introduced to me through a friend. He needed my help shipping his 2021 Honda Civic to Nigeria

He had come to Canada on a visitor visa and went to seek asylum in an attempt to regularize his immigration status. Unfortunately, his asylum claim was denied. He lost at the court hearing, lost on appeal, and was eventually served a notice by Immigration Canada(IRCC) to leave the country or face arrest and deportation

With a heavy heart, he returned to Nigeria in May. I included his vehicle in one of my of May containers, which is scheduled to arrive this week

Earlier this week, as we normally do with our customers, I tried reaching him to notify him about the arrival of his vehicle and the outstanding shipping and customs clearing charges

On this particular vessel carrying his car we have over 70 vehicles, about 18 containers in it, so it’s been tough and busy time reaching out to everyone and coordinating to making sure the customer experience is seamless and effective

After several unsuccessful attempts to contact him, I called the friend who had introduced him to me. Through mutual contacts, we received heartbreaking news: this young man, only 28 years old, passed away in his sleep last weekend in Ogun State

While no one can say with certainty what caused his death, I cannot help but believe that the emotional trauma, disappointment, and stress of his immigration struggles may have contributed to it

Now, we are left with the responsibility of handling his vehicle. There is no one available to pay the shipping and clearing costs. He came from a very poor background and was the breadwinner of his family. His family has appealed to us to assist them in any way we can

I am currently working with the friend who brought him to find the best solution. We intend to sell the vehicle as also advise by the family and ensure that the family receives whatever remains. We will do right by them

Sadly, this is not an isolated case

In the last two months alone, I have heard of two other Nigerians in Toronto whose asylum claims were denied and who later died under tragic circumstances. One of them is currently in a mortuary, and friends and community members are struggling to raise nearly $10,000 for burial expenses

Let me be very clear:

I have never encouraged illegal immigration on this page, and I never will

Coming to Canada or any country with fabricated stories of persecution in your home country in order to obtain asylum is a very risky and tricky path

What may have worked for some people in the past is no longer working the way it once did, it’s tougher now and govt are getting smarter and stricter

Moreso, due to the outrage against mass immigration the new Govt are frustrating everyone with measure and introducing new changes that serves as “Silent k1ller” to frustrate everyone.

Canada is officially in recession, it’s the only country among the G20 in recession. Canada is struggling economically. The grass is not as green as it used to be on this side. The reality today is very different from the picture many people are sold back home

If you know someone who migrated to Canada within the last 2-3 years, please be kind to them

Stop putting them under pressure.

Stop constantly asking them for financial assistance

Check on them. Encourage them. Show them love

Many are carrying burdens they cannot even talk about

And for those planning the journey to Canada, think carefully and do your research. No matter what anyone tells you, life abroad is not a magic solution to life’s problems. For many people, the journey is far more difficult than they imagined.

Nothing I say will stop people from pursuing their dreams, but at least let me help prepare your mind for the realities ahead.

I've noticed this Public Notice in circulation recently. For some people, this message is good news. For me, it is a painful reminder of how cruel this country can be to its own citizens.

Imagine retiring from service in 2009 or 2010 and only being told in 2026 that your gratuity cheque is ready. 16 years. 16 long years of waiting for money you worked for, earned, and deserved.

How many of those retirees are still alive today?

How many died while moving from one government office to another, begging for what rightfully belonged to them?

How many spent their final years in poverty after dedicating decades of their lives to teaching the children of this nation?

These questions should haunt every public official responsible for this disgrace.

A teacher gives the best years of his or her life to the country. They shape future doctors, lawyers, engineers, governors, and presidents. Yet, when it is time to reward their service, they are abandoned and forgotten.

We are expected to applaud because a debt that should have been paid in 2009 is finally being settled in 2026?

This is the height of injustice.

Families lose their loved ones daily. A man losing his wife and all children in a single day. Mothers are losing their sons and daughters. Children being turned to orphans.

YOUR LANDLORD JUST INCREASED YOUR RENT — HERE IS WHAT THE LAW ACTUALLY SAYS

Before you argue, before you threaten to leave, before you go online to vent

Pull out a calculator first.

Because whether you have a case or not depends on one thing: the percentage of increment.

THE SIMPLE RULE UNDER TENANCY LAW

A landlord cannot increase rent arbitrarily.

But "arbitrary" has a legal definition here and it may surprise you.

Any increment above 50–55% of your current rent is considered arbitrary and can be contested.

Any increment at or below 50–55%, you have no case. Pay or move out.

EXAMPLES TO MAKE IT CLEAR

These fall within legal range, no case, pay or move:

- ₦300k → ₦400k ✅
- ₦500k → ₦700k ✅
- ₦400k → ₦650k ✅
- ₦800k → ₦1.2M ✅

These exceed legal range, go to Magistrate Court and contest it:

- ₦300k → ₦550k ⚠️
- ₦500k → ₦900k ⚠️
- ₦400k → ₦800k ⚠️

SPECIAL CASE — WHEN THE LANDLORD ADDS NEW FACILITIES

If your landlord makes genuine improvements to the property — new facilities, renovations, upgrades — the threshold changes.

The increment can legally go up to 70–100%, depending on the value and standard of the improvements made.

So if your rent went from:

- ₦300k → ₦500k and the landlord renovated or added something new — no case, pay or move
- ₦500k → ₦1M with verifiable improvements — no case, pay or move

The key word is genuine improvement. Not a fresh coat of paint. Actual additions that increase the value or standard of the property.

WHAT ABOUT YEARLY INCREASES?

If your landlord increases rent every year, the same rule applies per increment.

As long as each yearly increase does not exceed 50–55% of the rent at that time, it is within the law.

The moment it crosses that threshold without corresponding improvements, that is when you have grounds to act.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU HAVE A CASE

1. Calculate the percentage increase
2. Confirm there were no new facilities or improvements added
3. If the increment exceeds 50–55% with no justification, proceed to the Magistrate Court in your jurisdiction
4. File a tenancy dispute complaint

You do not need to shout. You do not need to beg. The law gives you a process, use it.

BOTTOM LINE

Pick up your calculator before you pick up your emotions.

If the increment is within range, it is what it is. Make your decision.

If it crosses the line, you have legal standing. Exercise it.

Ignorance of the law protects no one.
