In the earliest days of programming subroutines were stretches of code that you kept in a notebook and copied into your coding sheets. You didn’t “call” them, you copied them in line and adjusted the addresses they referenced.

Why? Because the computer had no “call” instruction, no stack, and programs were not stored in memory, they were executed as they were being read from paper tape.
