Democrats get overruled by SEC - as expected sweeping Reg Crypto and Commodity Status rule changes move forward without Senate approval.

The SEC is advancing major crypto rulemaking, including a planned proposal for “Regulation Crypto” (a tailored offering regime for certain investment contracts involving crypto assets), after the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act stalled in the Senate ahead of its August recess.

SEC action: The agency scheduled a commission meeting for Friday, August 14, 2026, to vote on proposing Regulation Crypto. This would create a structured path for legal issuance of certain digital assets. SEC Chair Paul Atkins has indicated the agency is “ready, willing and able” to issue rules addressing many of the same issues as the Clarity Act (and broader Project Crypto efforts) if legislation does not advance.

The Republican-majority commission can move forward without Democratic support on the agency.

Broader agenda: Related efforts under Project Crypto (a coordinated SEC-CFTC initiative) include token taxonomy/guidance clarifying that most crypto tokens are not securities, an innovation exemption, broker-dealer custody rules, trading venue updates, and potential moves toward 24-hour trading or other market structure changes. The CFTC, under Chair Michael Selig, is partnering on taxonomy and jurisdictional clarity.

This has disrupted Red Sea traffic (forcing many ships around Africa). The US has previously struck Houthi targets, led or supported maritime security efforts , and recently reaffirmed support for the internationally recognized Yemeni government on maritime security and counterterrorism. Multinational coalitions are active. The US is focused on protecting transit and countering Iranian-backed threats, not seizing Yemeni territory or the strait itself.

Panama (Panama Canal)
High US attention under the current administration, with rhetoric about “reclaiming” influence amid concerns over Chinese-linked port operators. Panama’s Supreme Court annulled certain Hong Kong-based (CK Hutchison) concessions; Panama assumed temporary control of key ports, and Western operators are stepping in transitional roles. The US has expanded security cooperation, rotational presence options, and joint exercises. Contingency planning has been discussed (ranging from closer partnership to more assertive options), but the canal remains under Panamanian sovereignty and operation.

Malacca (Strait of Malacca)
The world’s busiest chokepoint for trade (especially energy to East Asia). Greenland

Talks continue with Denmark and Greenlandic authorities on expanding presence (potential additional sites/bases, upgrades, greater footprint) while formally respecting Danish sovereignty.
