In case you missed it... I had the pleasure of talking about the linkage between fluency & comprehension with Susan Lambert on the Science of Reading podcast.

Just a reminder...it is not just teachers who need to be trained in the science of reading. Educational leaders and ed board members need or should, at a minimum, have a working understanding of what evidence-based reading instructional practices are.
Why?
Because balanced literacy is entrenched in the American educational system, and all habits die hard.
Plus, teaching is already a hard and exhausting enough job, and when you add to that the act of "constantly swimming against the stream", it often leads to teacher burnout and misunderstandings.
Yes, teachers can be agents of change in their districts, but the change that happens when individual teachers start to speak up tends to move slowly through the system, and while it happens, many children are left behind, and that is too high of price to pay for our vulnerable learners.

I was just having a conversation about this with a colleague! I’m so tired of seeing this as a recommendation, especially for MLs, and most especially for our vulnerable MLs who are SIFE(students with interrupted formal education) who are learning to read for the first time!
Summer break is ON! ☀️ To celebrate, I'm giving away a copy of my new book, 7 Mighty Moves Reading Resources!
