4th-Graders @GWAcademyChi explored volts and watts. Students imagined they were electrons (electricity) and moved down the hallway at different speeds. "Volts=The speed of electricity" students exclaimed!
Thanks to Shannon Peters from @ComEd for helping our 4th gr Ss understand how math and science are integral in providing us with electricity as they inquire into how electricity impacts humans & the environment.
One of my Ss favorite part of the day is mindfulness. We take a daily 10 minutes to clear our minds and breathe. Those who prefer, read or doodle. The point is to enjoy a moment to be present. The weather today was perfect for outdoor mindfulness!
We continue the hard work in G4. Ss had a difficult but important conversation about the Chicago area, air pollution, and its impact in minority areas. What makes a good place to live? Who has access to it? What actions should we take? @GEMSChiPYP@googlejamboard@Tolerance_org
@Tnikrandt We are finishing the unit this week, but I would love to see if we can connect more throughout the year. This unit was about ecosystems, interdependence and human impacts. I’ll email you!
G4 Ss joined @NatGeoEducation Explorer Classroom to learn about human impact on Colombia’s fauna & flora. Ss had great questions about protecting laws and what actions are needed to help the ecosystem. This future generation is already up to greatness! @ibpyp@GEMSChiPYP
Fourth-Graders @GWAcademyChi@msmartha021 learned about how chemicals can harm the environment. Students inquired into how a chemical spill can be cleaned up. They tried to clean up the vegetable oil spill using three strategies and noticed that it takes time, and it's not easy.
@PegKeiner@ms_hansen@history_teach27 I love this! We could do something similar with ecosystems around the world or areas impacted by external factors.
Humans construct dams to reduce flooding, get water to farmlands, produce electricity, and access drinking water. 4th Graders @GWAcademyChi created their own dams out of popsicle sticks and pebbles. We will now explore the impact of dams on the Aral Sea in Asia.
At the end of our WWAIPAT unit, Ss travel to Angel Island, California, to learn more about the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882. We have heard many stories of immigrants from all over the world, and also learned about the work of Ms. Ala and the UNHRC with refugees in Syria.
Social distance? No problem! Ss wrote a short immigration story based on photos of immigrants and used Zoom to share them with a partner while in breakout rooms. So great to hear kids chatting again in class!

Inspired by @johnkrasinski, 4G Ss shared some good news! Overall consensus: there’s a new hope for climate change, pollution decreased in the world because people are staying at home, and animals are being adopted everywhere! #GEMSatHome@heatherprekop@GWAcademyChi
Lucky for us, one of the most sustainable factories in the world is in Chicago! Our G4s had the privilege of visiting Method and learning all about their environmentally friendly practices and how well they treat their workers! #hwoo@GWAcademyChi@msmartha021
Thanks @PegKeiner for connecting our G4s with Matt Jordan so we could learn about his sustainable coffee business, Gorongosa Coffee, and how they are helping the community and Gorongosa National Park! @msmartha021#hwoo@GWAcademyChi
As we wrapped our STP unit on interdependence within ecosystems, Ss showcased their robotics skills while developing a fighting deforestation robot that plants trees, an invasive species sensor and trap, and a firefighter Dash. The future never looked so bright! #fbf@PegKeiner
