The Case for Texas Tech 🌵

When I put out my CFP predictions a couple weeks ago and had Texas Tech winning the Big 12, a lot of people said it was crazy.

Here’s why I think it’s a real possibility in 2024:

They were 7-6 last year, but were far better than a 6-loss caliber team.

They lost in double OT on the road at Wyoming (they led 17-0, missed THREE field goals, and Wyoming needed a 4th down TD and 2-point conversion to win in OT).

Two teams stayed within one possession of Oregon last year. Washington (who beat them twice) and Texas Tech. The Red Raiders led Oregon by 9 in the 4th quarter while -4 in the TO margin, but ended up losing 38-30 after the Ducks scored 10 points in the final 1:10.

They out-gained BYU by 112 yards, but they were -5 in the turnover margin (including a fumble into the end zone and a fumble at the BYU 4) with their 3rd string QB and lost 27-14.

Their starting QB at the beginning of the year, Tyler Shough, suffered a season-ending injury in Week 4 (Shough is now at Louisville), and their backup Behren Morton suffered an injured throwing shoulder in the same game that he played the rest of the season with.

Morton’s back as QB1 and they added 4🌟, No. 13 QB in the class of 2024, Will Hammond behind him.

At RB they return a star in Tahj Brooks who rushed for 1,538 yards (4th most in the FBS) and 10 touchdowns last year.

The Red Raiders added Washington State’s leading receiver last year in Josh Kelly (923 yards, 8 TDs) and they bring in 5🌟 WR Micah Hudson (highest rated recruit in program history - 247Sports).

They brought in several offensive linemen, including:
• Toledo transfer Vinny Sciury (started 33 consecutive games for the Rockets)
• MTSU transfer Sterling Porcher (started 25 consecutive games)
• Memphis transfer Davion Carter (started every game for Memphis last year and did not commit a single penalty)
• JUCO transfer Maurice Rodriques (6’7”, 340 lbs, chose Texas Tech over Georgia, Florida, USC, and UCLA).
• 4🌟 OT recruit Ellis Davis

On defense, they bring back their top two tacklers in Ben Roberts and CJ Baskerville, as well as guys like CB Bralyn Lux and LB Jacob Rodriguez too.

SCHEDULE:
• They don’t play #12 Utah, #18 Kansas State, or #22 Kansas (three of the top 4 teams in Big 12 title odds).
• They get a bye week before playing #17 Oklahoma State.
• They start the year with their FCS opponent (easier start to the season than last year).
• Their G5 opponent is North Texas at home instead of Wyoming on the road at night.
• Their non-conference P4 opponent is WSU instead of CFP contender Oregon like last year.

Texas Tech did not have a winning record in Big 12 play from 2010-2021. They’ve been above .500 in Big 12 games in each of head coach Joey McGuire’s first two seasons there.

Their last 3 seasons with a winning record in Big 12 games: 2023 under McGuire, 2022 under McGuire, 2009 under Mike Leach.

Their most wins in a single season in the CFP era is 8 (2022 under McGuire).

McGuire’s been there two years and already landed the highest rated recruit in program history (Micah Hudson).

Something special is being built in Lubbock and the Red Raiders will be very interesting to watch this year. 👀
