A few years ago, my husband and I were flying out of Seattle.

He had dementia, so staying seated together wasn't optional for us.

Before boarding, I got a notification that our seats had been changed.

They had separated us by several rows.

I went to the gate agent to explain, but before I could even finish, she said the seat was needed for an air marshal.

I told her, “I understand, but you cannot separate us. My husband has dementia and needs to stay with me.”

She wasn't thrilled.

She gave me a look that could have melted the boarding gate.

But eventually, she moved us back into the seats we'd originally booked.

I completely understand that airlines have situations they need to accommodate.

But sometimes you have to explain your situation clearly and stand your ground.

Because the person who looks like they're simply being difficult may actually be dealing with something you can't see.

We weren't asking for special treatment.

We were asking to stay together because we needed to.
