1950களின் பிற்பகுதியில்தான் நாம் இப்போது காணும் வெள்ளுடை தரித்த வள்ளுவரை வரைவதற்கான முயற்சிகள் துவங்கின. இந்த முயற்சியைத் துவங்கியவர் கவிஞர் பாரதிதாசன். அவர் திராவிடர் கழகத்தைச் சேர்ந்த ராமச்செல்வன் என்பவருடன் சேர்ந்துவந்து, ஓவியர் வேணுகோபால் சர்மாவைச் சந்தித்தார். மூன்று பேரும் சேர்ந்து திருவள்ளுவர் படத்தை உருவாக்க திட்டமிட்டனர். இதற்கான செலவுகளை ராமச்செல்வன் ஏற்றுகொண்டார்" என்கிறார் திராவிட இயக்க ஆய்வாளரான க. திருநாவுக்கரசு.

சென்னைப் பல்கலைக்கழகத்தின் திருக்குறள் ஆராய்ச்சிப் பகுதி இந்தப் படம் வரையப்பட்டது குறித்து 'திருக்குறள் திருவுருவப் பட விளக்கம்' என்ற ஒரு சிறிய வெளியீட்டைக் கொண்டுவந்தது. தற்போதைய திருவள்ளுவரின் படத்தை அவர் ஏன் அப்படி வரைந்தார் என்பதற்கான விளக்கம் அந்த வெளியீட்டில் இடம்பெற்றிருந்தது.

இந்தப் படம் வரைந்து முடிக்கப்பட்ட பிறகு, 1960ல் சி.என். அண்ணாதுரையால் காங்கிரஸ் மைதானத்தில் இந்தப் படம் வெளியிடப்பட்டது. பிறகு இதே படம், மத்திய அரசால் தபால் தலையாகவும் வெளியிடப்பட்டது.

தி.மு.க. சட்டமன்றத்திற்குள் வந்த பிறகு, திருவள்ளுவர் உருவப் படத்தை சட்டமன்றத்தில் வைக்க வேண்டுமென மு. கருணாநிதி கோரிக்கை வைத்தார். "அதற்குப் பதிலளித்த முதல்வர் பக்தவத்சலம், மு. கருணாநிதி ஒரு உருவப்படத்தை வாங்கியளித்தால், வைப்பதில் ஆட்சேபணையில்லை" என்றார்.

இதற்குப் பின் 1964 ஆம் ஆண்டு மார்ச் 23ஆம் தேதி தமிழக சட்டமன்றத்தில் வேணுகோபால் வரைந்த திருவள்ளுவரின் உருவத்தை அன்றைய துணைக் குடியரசுத் தலைவரான சாகிர் உசேன் திறந்து வைத்தார்" என்கிறார் திருநாவுக்கரசு.
