Soc. Studies Teacher. Western Branch HS. BA, Secondary Education; BGS, History. KU Alum. In-progress: MA in American History— Gilder Lehrman, Pace University
If you are an educator and you are not righteously supporting and empowering your students to makes waves and enact change, then you need to find a different profession. Love them, listen to them, let them lead!
Tuned into “Raising Antiracist Kids” with Ibram X. Kendi, because today I am a teacher and one day I want to be a mom. Just ordered “How to Be An Antiracist” and “Antiracist Baby”, from Haymarket Books.
Yesterday, my 14-year-old cousin said, “We’re living through a social studies chapter” and I can’t stop thinking about that, about him, about how young people are processing this moment.
They were incredibly disheartened when I told them we had to put our project on hold to review and take the mandatory state test. I could see their love of learning and interest evaporate.
Prime example of the detriment of high stakes testing. My students were given a project which allowed the to work collaboratively and creatively. They were so into the project and putting forth such effort that they asked if they could have more times. 1/
Please talk to your students, especially your white students, about race. Historically and contemporarily. Just because they are young doesn’t mean there aren’t prejudices that need to be addressed.
My MA classes through The Gilder Lehrman program at Pace started last night, and I am so excited to continue in this program. I didn’t realize how much I missed being a student after just two short years!
My professional goals/5 year plan:
1. Obtain a masters degree (in progress starting fall 2019)
2. Take students abroad 3. Present at NCSS 4. Publish an article in an academic journal 5. Become a national board certified educator
