This semester was the most challenging yet (thanks covid), but the challenges helped show me how empathy and understanding are such an important thing to show to ALL students. You never know exactly what someone is going through, so extend the golden rule to all #tch204spring2020
@dr_s_bertrand BUT if I did, I would really hope teachers consider less group work. I know teaching is collaborative but working in groups is difficult, especially when you can’t be together in the same space.
@dr_s_bertrand I was discussing this possibility earlier today. Honestly, I think I would take a semester off to avoid taking all virtual classes. I didn’t sign up to be taught through a screen and if I’m paying so much $$$ I want to get the best education possible #tch204spring2020
@dr_s_bertrand A3: successes: zoom class because it allows class interactions and breakout rooms which are helpful (esp in math) but zoom does pose a problem for students with unreliable internet; leniency on turning assignments in; openmindedness with policies
@morgan_kelliher @dr_s_bertrand That’s a great goal! I think I’ll try that too. The last thing I want to do is have professors think I don’t care when I’m really just struggling myself
@dr_s_bertrand A2: I’m trying to work on practicing self-compassion because I’ve been so hard on myself lately. The transition to online learning was rough and beating myself up about everything I’ve done “wrong” has not helped.
@dr_s_bertrand this massive problem in education. Oftentimes I feel overwhelmed and disappointed when thinking about reform because I know it’s so much bigger than me. I will do the best I can as an educator to stand up for marganilized students if/when they need me to. (3/3)
@dr_s_bertrand A4: Reimagining school is honestly so hard for me to do because it’s been the same way for SUCH a long time. It’s an establishment that’s always been focused on the “normal” student (cis, white, male) but has just recently been trying to change. It hasn’t even been that long(1/?)
@dr_s_bertrand since desegregation of schools, but schools are moving to be more progressive slowly and surely. Establishing healthy relationships with all students in the classroom and assuring that they and their culture are visible in books and activities are just a start to helping (2/?)
@dr_s_bertrand A3: Equity is giving people what they need to succeed and is different than equality which is giving everyone the same thing. Moving from equality to equity is the best way to run a classroom because not every student needs the same supports. By creating relationships with (1/2)
@dr_s_bertrand A3: my students early on, it’ll be easier for me to see which individuals need which supports in order to succeed to the best of their ability. There may always be different opinions on what students need, so involving and talking to the student, parents, and other teachers (2/3)
