Did you know that in the wild, giraffes are adapted to rest almost entirely through short, standing naps? This is a behavior shaped by their natural environment, keeping them alert to predators. In human care, however, calves like Pancake may also choose to lie down and relax as they explore their habitat since they are not at risk of predation. When they are able to lie down to sleep, they get even more deep, restful sleep than they would with just standing naps — helping encourage healthy growth and development. 🦒🍂

Moments like this give guests a closer look at how giraffes grow and how their behaviors can vary depending on their surroundings, helping build understanding and appreciation for giraffes both here at the Zoo and in the wild.
