African leaders are stepping up on the global energy transition→ At the recent Kigali @SEforALLorg Forum, energy ministers agreed a 7-point vision to achieve a just & equitable energy transition. Lots to see here (esp #3). 🧵 /1

Pandemics don’t end because Congress cuts their funding.
Let your representatives know this is not an option. Speak out on behalf of sustainable investments in our health, on behalf of a safer world now and for our children.
Just an insane decision. And note that this lawsuit is being brought under the California Environmental Quality Act, though everyone, on all sides, knows the issues here aren't environmental.
So please, stop telling me how CEQA has already been fixed.

Combined cycle gas turbines are the dominant gas-fired power tech due to high efficiency & low operating costs.
But in low-income countries open cycle can be more affordable & compatible w/ a high-renewables future.
@mthurber, @OluVerheijen detail why: https://t.co/86JiONs7A5
What's a vertical energy transition? Why does it present a unique challenge to energy-poor countries?
@MurefuBarasa & @mthurber detail the shift to renewables in countries facing rapidly growing electricity demand with a low base of energy infrastructure:

A big yes to my @energyforgrowth colleagues @MurefuBarasa & @mthurber. I've been using the terms "additive" + "substitutionary" for years to describe exactly this difference b/w adding renewables to boost supply v adding renewables to decarbonize the grid.

Great stuff -- these financing mechanisms for coal phase-out are excellent ways for rich countries to help support lower-GHG pathways for poorer countries.
I spoke on NPR's Here & Now today about the rapid eclipse of coal by gas in the US, the importance of mitigating methane leaks, and where gas goes from here. https://t.co/r3RvRldigZ
Great paper showing the short payback times of natural gas turbines. This makes them well-suited to provide reliability services in a high-RE future -- and less likely to become "stranded assets."
🔔New Paper Alert!🔔
We look at the payback of recent natural gas turbines to consider how they differ from traditional generation assets and why this is relevant for the future.

If CCS ends up playing a meaningful role in electricity sector decarbonization, it will come from things like this rather than trying to extend the life of the dying coal industry.
This is momentous. First time this new power cycle, the zero-emissions supercritical CO2 Allam-Fetvedt cycle, is producing electricity for export to a regional synchronized AC grid.
The last time this happened must have been 1st power plant w/Brayton cycle gas turbine in 1960!
I'm thinking about this wrenching Alice Gregory story from 2017. "There are no self-help books for anyone who has accidentally killed another person. An exhaustive search yielded no research on such people, and nothing in the way of therapeutic protocols."

China halting overseas coal is not really news in Africa. @jakekincer & I looked at every project in the pipeline and found just 1 (Chinese project in Zimbabwe) that was actually likely. The rest are all already cancelled or improbable. https://t.co/7VX8Tcni6z
