Those were Zulfikar Ali Bhutto's words to Pakistan's scientists in January 1972.

26 years later they delivered.

May 28, 1998. 3:15pm. Ras Koh Hills. Chagai District. Balochistan.

Five simultaneous underground nuclear explosions. Pakistan became the seventh nuclear power in history.

The first Muslim majority nation to join the nuclear club.
After 28 years later still the only Muslim Nuclear power nation on earth.

The road to Chagai was 26 years of sacrifice.

Western governments blocked Pakistan's supply chains. The CIA monitored every move. Sanctions upon sanctions. Equipment seized at borders. Scientists surveilled. Technology transfers blocked at every turn.

Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan built the uranium enrichment facility at Kahuta with whatever Pakistan could find. Dr. Samar Mubarakmand led the test itself. Hundreds of unnamed engineers and physicists gave everything they had to a program that had to survive in complete secrecy for over two decades.

On May 11 and 13 1998 India tested five nuclear devices. India's Defence Minister then issued a veiled public threat toward Pakistan over Kashmir.

President Clinton personally called Nawaz Sharif four times begging him not to test. The final call the night before lasted 25 minutes. Intense. Pleading. Offering incentives Pakistan could not refuse on any other day.

Sharif refused.

200 residents relocated. Five devices assembled in a 3,000-foot fish-hook tunnel. Sealed with 6,000 bags of cement and 12,000 bags of sand. A young engineer named Muhammad Arshad who had designed the triggering mechanism pressed the button.

Before the test the Prime Minister told Dr. Mubarakmand: Do not fail. We cannot afford failure. If we fail we will not survive.

At 3:15pm the mountain turned white.

They had not failed.

Sanctions hit immediately. US. Japan. Others. Pakistan's foreign reserves frozen. Economy squeezed. The price was real and it was heavy.

Pakistan paid every rupee of it.

Today Pakistan has 170 nuclear warheads. A nuclear triad. Missiles reaching 2,750 kilometres. An unbreakable deterrence that has kept the peace for 28 years.

Built by scientists who were sanctioned at every step.

Guarded by a nation that refused to bend.

Youm-e-Takbir. The Day of Greatness.
