I am starting a thread compiling many (relatively) common mistakes I've seen people make over the years writing/talking about politics and Capitol Hill (I've made many of these myself). Without further ado... 1/x
@MarPanagio@VCBrags@TheCinesthetic It’s one of the few shows I’ve watched that actually improves with each new season. The first season is definitely the weakest. Feels like the writers were tasked with creating the next Mad Men, and then decided to go in a different direction.
@DKThomp@mattyglesias Haven’t listened yet, but the current period is not a historical anomaly. The post Civil War period (after Grant) had similarly razor thin election results basically until the election of McKinley. Rutherford B. Hayes lost the popular vote and only one the EC by 1!
@drbrignall@mattyglesias@DanAncona The DC Health Dept. had a good COVID dashboard that you could track that data in real time, at the time. As I recall, the schools remained closed well after it moved out of the high-risk category (and, again, well after the vaccine was widely available for at-risk populations).
@drbrignall@mattyglesias@DanAncona Can't speak for @mattyglesias obviously, but DC public schools remained (with rare exceptions) fully remote through June 2021, well after the vaccine was widely available. Other large school districts did the same. It remains a sore subject for many of us who went through it.
@JamesCariello@giantsfan97@BigBlueVCR As I recall, he was the lead candidate to replace Steve Spurrier as the Redskins/Commanders HC after 2003, but then they brought back Joe Gibbs instead.
@George_A_Callas There are so many ridiculous things about this ranking. JQA was a visionary statesman, but accomplished basically nothing after the “corrupt bargain.” Garfield and Harrison died their first year of office. Until recently Polk was considered the greatest 1 term President.
@conor64@Patterico This thread by @beyondreasdoubt was the best I’ve seen of laying out the actual charges in the case, and what Trump was accused/convicted of:
W/o knowing the details, I would venture a guess that in every other falsification case prosecuted by Bragg, there was another party who the defendant “intended to defraud,” not a nebulous charge of defrauding the public via an election. That’s the novelty of this case.

"In Bragg’s first 15 months as DA, his team filed 166 felony counts for falsifying business records against 34 people or companies."
Trump case obvious special in many ways, but this is not something the made up to hang him with.

@George_A_Callas It’s especially egregious that this adjustment happened after 461(l) was (twice!) used as a payfor for the ARP and then the IRA. We always viewed it as a necessary evil to finance other priorities (but still not great!).
Tropicana Field may be the worst ballpark in Major League Baseball, but their main camera setup behind the pitcher is awesome. It’s almost directly behind and you see so much more of the break on pitches than usual. I wish more stadiums placed their cameras there.
It’s true that this and “Rockin’ in the free world” are two of the most misunderstood “patriotic” songs. OTOH, they are both absolute bangers, and their ubiquity at political rallies is…understandable?
Look I'm just begging this younger generation to get some basic rock 'n roll literacy before they go and do something silly like assume "Born in the USA" is a patriotic song.
For SSTBs in 2023, the 199A deduction phases-out at $182,100 (for individuals) / $364,200 (joint filers), and completely phases out at $232,100/$464,200. So yes, smaller law firms are eligible for the 199A deduction, but partners at larger firms are largely ineligible./🧵
Nice write-up by @jimtankersley of the v. interesting new NBER paper by @omzidar, @gchodorowreich, and others on TCJA in the N.Y. Times, but I have to throw a flag about one line near the end of the article.

Law is one of 12 "Specified Service Trades or Businesses" that are ineligible for the Section 199A deduction (others include Health, Accounting, Actuarial Science, Performing Arts, Consulting, Athletics, Financial Services, and others) above a certain income level.
