He died in the hospital.

Witnesses gave the police a description.
They tracked the driver down.

Here is what they found.

The man behind the wheel was not supposed to be here.
He had a deportation order.

Not pending. Not recent.

A federal judge ordered him removed in 2012.

Read that again.

For thirteen years, the order to send him home
sat in a file while he lived in California.

He was caught once, in 2011.
He was released with a slip of paper
and a date to appear in court.

He never showed up.

So they ordered him deported.
And then nothing happened for over a decade.

Thirteen years.
One walk by the harbor.

That is how long the gap stayed open
before an old man fell into it.

He should have made it home that Friday.
He should be telling this story himself,
shaking his head about the traffic.

He should be alive.

An order that was actually carried out
would have saved him.

He was caught. The paper was signed.
And then everyone looked away for thirteen years.

A seventy-one-year-old man crossed a street at noon
and paid for every one of those years.

Last year I interviewed the mother of San Diego Islamic Center attacker Cain Clark after she contacted me through Instagram.

She said her son was mandated to take an Ethnic Studies class to graduate from @sdschools According to the mother, the first two weeks focused on “whiteness” and “white privilege.” She said Cain, who is mixed race with Indonesian heritage on his father’s side, felt uncomfortable in the class and believed it was teaching him to view himself and his white family members negatively.
