Sony paid Tom Holland $500,000 for his first Spider-Man movie. It made $880 million. By his third film, his pay was around $10 million and the movie made nearly $2 billion. He just admitted he may have used that power, hinting he might quit to push Sony for a better deal.
In his own words, he might have been trying to scare Sony into thinking he was finished, right as a new deal was being worked out, using the chance he might walk away to push for more. Plenty of actors try a move like that. Almost none can make a billion-dollar company blink.
A threat like that lands because of who owns Spider-Man. In 1999, a nearly broke Marvel sold the movie rights to Sony for about $7 million. Those films have made billions since. On paper, Sony owns the film rights, but Holland is the one fans show up for. The suit is worth a fortune. The man inside it is worth more.
We learned that the hard way in 2019. Spider-Man had been turning up in the bigger Marvel films, and Disney, which owns Marvel, wanted Sony to split the profits down the middle. Sony said no. The two sides fell out so badly that for about a month Spider-Man was kicked out of the Marvel movies completely. Then Holland stepped in. He got hold of the head of Disney, Bob Iger, and made his case on the phone, three pints deep at a pub quiz with his family. Iger later said on Jimmy Kimmel's show that the call moved him to ring Sony and get everyone talking again. Within weeks they had a new deal: Disney would help pay for the films in exchange for a cut, and Spider-Man was back. One of the movies that deal saved was No Way Home, the same one that made nearly $2 billion.
So this week Holland turned 30, the same age he once said would mean he had 'done something wrong' to still be in the suit. Now he says he'll keep playing Spider-Man for as long as they let him. He can say that and mean it, because he has already shown that one phone call from him can pull two giant companies back together. Both of them have a few billion reasons to keep him happy.
Truly wild how this one random commercial real estate photo from 2003 let to one of the highest grossing A24 movies of all time.
Amazing how a location can inspire an entire creative entity.

First look at the filming of Ithaca in Christopher Nolan's โTHE ODYSSEYโ.
The location was on a rocky hill that would take 45 minutes to hike up but the path was not wide enough to bring up filming equipment.
All of the cast had to hike up in costume while helicopters would carry crew & equipment up and down โ they also had to build a base camp platform that could accommodate 200 people.
