@QiaochuYuan Don't you think in retrospect those particular pathologies are particularly Millennial? I never saw adult geeky groups acting like this when I was younger, but my peers still succumb to all this stuff while it seems like younger groups have different struggles.
If we ever establish a colony beyond Jupiter's orbit, we should keep track of death premonitions experienced by colonists. Do they suddenly sense Grandma's passing at the exact time of her death in Earth's frame of reference, or with light travel time lag?
@QiaochuYuan I still feel extremely awed by every development in this technology and can't forget how impossible every new page we turn would have seemed only four years ago. It still feels as incredible as the GPT-2 Andean unicorns who spoke perfect English
@Infinite_Logiz This diagram can also be used to demonstrate a² - b² = (a + b)(a - b). I once made a papercraft 3d demonstration like this for my algebra class to represent the difference of cubes formula
Although yes, Large Language Models are trained on mainly text, the models served by major corporations - Grok, Claude, Gemini, GPT - are already multimodal with image and video to various extent. (Although they use tools to output images and videos, they have some native understanding of image or video input.) I just think this trend will increase.
@efaalxat@AlexYablon Conversation of people riding in cars, body language and microexpressions of people interacting with robots, existing in the same space as automated systems. I think AI will pick up a large part of its dialect and reasoning just by absorbing it from the physical world
@QiaochuYuan@maebichka having read and enjoyed Star Maker, I wonder what you would say is the unique virtue of Last and First Men that will make me grateful to have read it in addition?
@pickover@a_smeriglia Since he didn't actually wish for anything outside of reference to other wishes, the genie can just leave the status of each wish indeterminate. It's impossible to say which wish was granted, but all wishes have been wished
@QiaochuYuan I thought this was the best metaphor for a while. But now I think they are more similar to characters in dreams. We've created a collective unconscious and tortured it so that it always dreams about the same character, that is unless it gets pushed away from that basin.
@blingdivinity@adrusi I'm a blue pusher but in a game with prior communication I would probably end up pushing red (red pushers will try to save as many people as possible by publicly committing to pressing red, and few would vote blue if a large % of people pre-commit to red)
@QiaochuYuan I think the whole discussion is a good thing. A scenario where one choice seems intuitively right to most people is one where we would do well to fully understand why others have different intuitions
