❤️SHE MATTERS: ISLA BELL!❤️

This is one of the hardest She Matters posts I’ve had to write.
In early October, I saw a poster bearing photos of a happy young woman.
Her family had pasted inner-Melbourne with the flyers, desperate to find the 19-year-old after she disappeared from their home.
Back then, I hoped she would not be a name on my toll of violence.
This morning as the sun began to rise on my beautiful Melbourne, I learned this amazing young woman had been murdered.
Her name is Isla Bell. Isla disappeared from her family home on October 4. She was killed at St Kilda East on October 7 and her body left in a tip at Dandenong.
A man is charged with her murder. Another is charged with assisting him.
Isla is the 85th Australian woman lost to violence in 2024. She is the 15th Australian woman’s death I’ve documented in just over three weeks.
I will not repeat the allegations surrounding Isla’s death because they are too traumatising and I want you to remember her as she was - a gentle-hearted woman with strength and kindness in every cell of her being.
I will leave you with these words from Isla’s mum.
“I am so, so sorry my darling daughter. I could not protect you from your complex illnesses and this cruel world. I was so proud of your choices this year, your strength to endure despite your suffering. All you ever wanted was to create, make and nurture life, to love and be loved.
“We were so much looking forward to being reunited as a family again; my heart aches and cannot reconcile that’s not going to happen.”
Australia has lost another woman to an epidemic that is both foreseeable and preventable.
You matter Isla Bell – so very much.
