@goldschmidt2023
@goldschmidt2023 @EAG_ @geochemsoc As a new PhD student in isotope geochemistry, I am excitedly looking forward to my first major international conference. Lyon is a great place to be! @goldschmidt2023 @EAG_ @geochemsoc
10 years ago at 2:46 pm JST on 3/11 (or 9:46 pm 3/10 in the PNW), the Japan Trench megathrust slipped 60-80 meters in one go. The movement launched a tsunami that was among the largest ever seen with water run-up to 38 meters in places (124 feet: an 11 story building). (1/n)
Kalktuffen seit > Tausend Jahren.
In 2 days, I’ll attempt the most precise Mars landing ever. I’m right on target. On Feb. 18, get a play-by-play of my landing right here. Meanwhile, preview the major steps in my final #CountdownToMars: https://t.co/4ZnX8DRUHg
All geosciences disciplines in Munich will be moved into the same building, hopefully fostering more supra-disciplinary collaboration! Great news that this investment has been confirmed as a lot of brain work has already been invested in the lab design. @IgelHeiner @gwoerhe
Fun Fact: If you walked from the bottom of Grand Canyon to the top of the tallest nearby peak, Mount Humphreys (seen in the distance) - you would gain a whopping 10,400 feet—just 1,000 feet less than to the top of Mount Everest (from Basecamp)! #InternationalMountainDay
I am enjoying to study @ETH_ERDW. Today, I explored cosmogenic radionuclides of the Great Aletsch Glacier, ice cores from North Greenland and the Danube deep-sea fan. Is there anything more satisfying than to travel 1000s of km within one single day? #geology#geochronology
If I were to put my (learning) experience of my first two weeks of study @ETH_ERDW into simple words, I would decide for: curiosity, perseverance, thoroughness & efficiency - not to forget pleasure & joy. I am looking forward to my upcoming lectures and lab work!
August 29, 1883, the #tsunami waves created by the #Krakatoa explosion traveling around the world create a visible rise of sea level in the English Channel 🌋

Slickensides with different kinematic markers developed on Mesozoic limestones. Left: small-scale Riedel shear planes (Kundler Klamm near Wörgl, Tyrol); right: tear-off edges (Partnachklamm near Garmisch-Partenkirchen, southern Bavaria). #tectonics#structuralgeology#slickenside
3D visualization of seismic waves from the M7.8 #AlaskaEarthquake rolling across the seismic stations in the Alps (including #AlpArray). Colors are related to the vertical ground motion (up = red & down = blue).
Thanks to EIDA and Hetényi et al. (2018) for making this possible.
