GMF and the @alfredlandecker hosted a timely and candid panel discussion moderated by @muelherr, Co‑CEO of ALF, with welcome remarks by GMF Vice President @SudhaDavidWilp.

GMF Resident Distinguished Fellow Beth Sanner, Professor of Political Science at the Polish Academy of Sciences @SusMonika and Security Policy Correspondent at Deutschlandfunk @MarcusPindur discussed the rapidly shifting transatlantic and European security landscape and the leadership choices Europe now faces.

The speakers highlighted:

1. America’s foreign policy now functions as an extension of domestic polarization, leaving allies without reliable strategic anchors. The belief that the EU was “designed to disadvantage the United States” is shaping policy in Washington. Alliances based on shared values and shared threat assessments are currently missing.

2. There will be no simple return to the old transatlantic status quo, even after Trump’s presidency. NATO may endure but only if Europeans develop real agency. Europe must stop focusing on what Trump might do and start acting on what Europe itself can do. Spending alone is insufficient; capabilities, coordination, and political leadership matter far more than headline figures.

3. Russia and unpredictability from Washington have created rare alignment on common threats in Europe. The danger is not lack of awareness, but lack of speed: election cycles, domestic politics, and institutional inertia are narrowing the window to act.

4. Ukraine is central to Europe’s security and credibility. U.S. support for Ukraine is currently close to zero and Europe must step up to help Ukraine win and learn from its battlefield experience.

5. European defense cannot develop without Germany, but leadership also means listening to neighbors, to Eastern partners, and to those closest to the front line.
