When will we understand that walkability is not the sanitisation of public spaces by removing streetside commerce, but actually reducing vehicular movement to prioritise pedestrians?
Stop making our streetscapes barren and aesthetic spaces only for rich people
This take is unpopular because itâs real immature, btw.
Iâve literally watched white classmates develop real empathy for Black people because of To Kill a Mockingbird. Fiction can expand how folks understand motivation, fear, contradiction. The shit essays and self help books barely touch.
Autobiographies always have a spin but good Fiction often doesn't tell you what to think. It drops you into situations where every choice costs something, and you have to sit with ambiguity and imperfect decisions, which builds REASONING.
I've learned about West African traditions, Constantinople's politics, and political struggles of the Ottoman Empire from fiction. Malcolm Gladwell is cool, but he didn't improve my vocabulary like Ursula K. Le Guin.
Fiction isnât just entertainment. Itâs mental rehearsal for being human. Escaping into a book can be as good for your brain and self regulation as meditation.
And yeah, let me add one more chaotic perception I've had: Many ânon-fiction onlyâ men I've met are uncreative as hell and tend to treat women like achievements.
âItâs just that all of these Caribbean resorts look exactly the same to me. Itâs just a random beach.â
âOh I see. You think this has nothing to do with you. You sit at your laptop, and you select⊠I donât know, that all-inclusive resort for instance, because youâre trying to tell the world that you take yourself too seriously to care about what cookie-cutter consumerist hotel your parents made you go to.
But what you donât know is that hotel isnât just all-inclusive, itâs not Ixtapa, itâs not Zihuatanejo. Itâs actually CancĂșn. Youâre also blithely unaware of the fact that in the late 60s, Mexico ran a huge trade deficit with the US. They were industrializing rapidly, importing machinery and materials that had to be paid for in dollars. Then I believe it was INFRATUR, wasnât it, that actually spent months building a computer model, feeding data to an IBM 360 to analyze Mexicoâs entire coastline, evaluating climate, beach quality, accessibility, and development costs.
Then they identified CancĂșn as a strategic tourism development zone, deliberately modeled on postwar Mediterranean resort economies. By the mid-1990s, major U.S. and European hotel chains standardized the all-inclusive resort model there. That model was then replicated, refined, and exported across the Caribbean.
Eventually, that choice filtered down through Expedia algorithms, airline bundle deals, and trickled on down into some TikTokâs influencer video which you no doubt watched in bed doom scrolling. However, CancĂșn represents billions of dollars in coordinated state planning, private capital, labor arbitrage, and tourism dependency. Tens of thousands of jobs. Entire regional supply chains.
And itâs sort of comical that you think you simply picked "a random beach" when in fact youâre sipping a piña colada at a resort selected for you by the Mexican federal governmentâs years-long optimization process⊠from a bunch of random beaches.â
People don't encroach the streets in India because they like impeding the public. They do it because they're poor and the street stalls are a livelihood that will get them an extra day of survival. Idc if it means the bourgeoisie majority lose the ever-appealing 'walkable city'
