That's the end result of all democracy. People forget that the widespread democracy experiment is still relatively very new, only being widely adopted in the last hundred years and we are only now seeing it's inevitable end result.

Full blown totalitarian governments usually achieve full authoritarianism in a few months or years. Democratic governments do it slowly, introducing new laws every few years or so, usually after instituting crackdowns with catchy slogans like "war on drugs" or "war on terrorism" etc to justify these new laws. Each of these crackdowns usually results in a bunch of new laws being introduced. Do this enough times and people start to realise that their freedoms are being eroded.

The citizenry then start to realise that walls are being slowly built around them and begin to resist, they might become anti-government, share anti-government sentiment online or in written literature, protest, become violent etc.

Those in government get very worried that their power and fat pay cheques are now under risk, so they institute more crackdowns and introduce yet even more laws to ban such things to protect themselves. This is the stage we are currently in.

Rinse and repeat and over a long enough period, boom you get totalitarianism. What makes it even funnier is democracy was apparently widely adopted to prevent totalitarianism. Democracy is just totalitarianism but very very slowly. Democracy is just frog-in-the-pot totalitarianism.
