Letter to My Sons and Daughters: Show Up, or Miss Out

My dear sons and daughters,

One of the most valuable lessons life has taught me is this: when you don’t show up, someone else will—and the opportunity moves on. It’s quiet, it’s subtle, but it’s real. And often, that chance won’t circle back.

This truth has shaped who I am today—emotionally, financially, socially, and spiritually. It’s not one of those I have read about in the books I read. It’s something I’ve lived. Over the years, I’ve been entrusted with many responsibilities. Not because I was the most skilled or had all the answers, but because I made a habit of being present. I responded when called. I stepped in when others hesitated.

Looking back, I credit much of my growth to that simple decision: show up. At work. At Family level. With clients. In moments that felt small and in those that carried weight. I didn’t wait for clarity or comfort. I said yes, even when I felt unsure—and learned as I went.

It hasn’t always gone smoothly. I’ve failed. I’ve disappointed myself. But I’ve also built trust. I’ve delivered. I’ve made progress. People have learned they can rely on me not because I’m perfect, but because I’m consistent. I take responsibility seriously. I respect deadlines. I stay focused. I try to give the person who entrusted me something they won’t regret.

Over time, I’ve come to understand my own wiring—my strengths, my blind spots, the kind of environments where I thrive—through showing up and doing the work. That clarity didn’t come through reflection alone. It came through experience.

And so I want you to hear this from me: don’t underestimate the power of being available. It’s not glamorous. It won’t always be applauded. But it’s one of the most valuable habits you can build.

People don’t chase those who are indifferent. They trust those who are present. So show up. Pay attention. Say yes. Take responsibility seriously—even when it feels small. Over time, that habit will shape your character, your career, your relationships, and your faith.

Life opens up to those who are ready—and being ready often just means being willing.

During Monday’s fellowship on “What Are Safe Days?”, the speaker Dr Bekson Tayebwa @TBekson skillfully guided us through the facts, myths, and science of the menstrual cycle and reproductive health.
